any luck with the recent logs i attached? or should i proceed with the restore to a previous state?
I do not know much about deciphering logs, but I know how to get help. You might try a system restore to prior to Windows update attempted install of MSE 2.
You can also set up a case with MS here at no charge:
https://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=6527&st=1&wfxredirect=1
There is also this:
For home users, no-charge support is available by calling 1-866-PCSAFETY (1-866-727-2338; and/or 1-866-234-6020 and/or 1-800-936-5700) in the United States and in Canada or by contacting your local Microsoft subsidiary. There is no-charge for support calls that are associated with security updates. When you call, clearly state that your problem is related to a Security Update and cite the update's KB number (e.g., KB982312; KB2092914).

Possibly an incomplete uninstall. Try these tips:

The new version of MSE uninstalls the old version before installing the new one. Have you tried downloading the install program from here instead of using Windows Update to install ti?

Sorry if you did not see my question embedded within. I do not post here often and am not used to the new formatting and did not notice the quick reply section below as I was responding to your post. Here is my question:
Any way to do this without the Windows 7 SDK? I like the idea, but am against adding 2.5 GB of files to my OS drive

I dont think there is a free version of Bootvis for Win7
there is one It is called Windows Performance Toolkit. make sure you have the service Superfetch running and next try to speed up the boot with the help of my guide:

and i have enabled Win7 to use 2 CPUs rather than 1 - any other work arounds?
forget this "tweak". Windows always use all cores.

It is not necessary to disable the plugin. Just go to tools/ Options/ Applications/ scroll down to Windows Media Audio/Video file (video/X-MS-WMV) in the right hand column. Then go over to the left hand column and change it. When you click on it, a arrow with a drop down box will appear. Change it from using the plugin to use WMP (default). I just figured this out yesterday as I also posted this question on another Windows 7 forum and got no answers. I have not needed to change any other of these settings so far.

As well as set the CD first in boot order (or use "F12 boot order" at boot if the option is available), you will probably need to "Press any key" to actually boot from CD.
Yes I have used F12 to set the boot order. This would be a downgrade from XP pro to XP home so the system seems to think that you want to boot the current OS.

I am working on an old corporate PC that has XP pro installed on it. I was trying to remove files and data, but am frozen out in most situations. The person that used this PC is deceased. I can log into his user account, but that is about all I can do regarding making any changes to the PC. I have tried password recovery software, but it did not work.
I have a copy of XP home that I would like to install, but trying to boot up into the setup mode only takes me back to XP pro.
Any suggestions. I am guessing that I will need some type of boot software that will let me format the disk.
Thanks

I've recently reformatted my HD and installed Windows 7, since then I've been getting freezes at random moments. Sometimes I can use the PC for many hours straights without problems, however sometimes the freeze happens just few minutes after boot. The freezes look like this: I can still move the cursor, but when I click start or if I want open a new program nothing happens, however when I was running MFC when freezing and it was still playing a video, I can still watch the entire video without problem, I can even rewind back to watch it again, also I can still move the MFC window.
Hence, I suspect this occurs due to HD failures? Any tools out there that I can use to check that?
Thanks in advance!
Check to see that you have the latest drivers for your hardware. I would suspect display drivers. Can you ctl/alt/del and bring up task manager after a freeze? If so, you can usually end the program that may be hanging the system. It does not always come up immeduately.

The only way to disable UAC for a program is to go into the shortcut that launches the application's properties, go to the compatibility tab, and check "run as administrator".
Does not work on my computer.

I have a small program that I used to use when I had Windows 98. I downloaded the newest version that is compatible with Windows XP. I can get the program to open just fine if I run the exe or the shortcut to it. If however I have the shortcut in the startup group it does not load the program. I also set the program up as a task and that did not work either. I have tried all different levels of compatibility and nothing will let it load up when I startup.
Also is there anyway to disable the UAC for specific programs as I do not want to disable it altogether.

You need to find the Windows live link in the start menu. Click on it and it will get you Windows Mail. If you upgraded from Vista using the upgrade method, all of your accounts and contacts should be restored. It does not look the same, but works OK.

This version installed and ran correctly on my computer where 4.0 RC2 would not. I did however find an issue with this breaking the right click and file "send link" context menu in Firefox 2.0.0.20 and it worked incorrectly with Firefox 3.5.2. I uninstalled version 4.0 final and discovered that this was the cause. My goal was to try and run Firefox 3.5.2 and it did, but it did not seem to be much of an improvement to me. It is possible that maybe I could have fixed the mailto application in 3.5.2 to point to the proper application, but I think I might stick with 2.0.0.20. Maybe if I ran firefox.exe in 98 compatibility mode it would work properly.

After doing some research, I have found that it is KernelEx 4.0 final that is doing this. I am posting this issue in the member projects forum. I uninstalled this version, but will not try version 4.0 RC2 as it would not run stable on my machine. Perhaps if I ran firefox.exe in 98 compatibility mode it would work, I might try this later.

I was running version 2.0.0.20 and decided I wanted to try version
3.5.2. I renamed the folder of the older browser and installed
3.5.2. When I tried to use the "send link" command both with the
right click and the file menu, it would bring up a window of my C:/ directory. Usually an Outlook
Express window with the link attached would come up and all I would
have to do was address it and send.
I uninstalled 3.5.2 and renamed the old directory, reinstalled FF
2.0.0.20, imported IE settings and restored todays startup registry
and nothing has brought back this ability. Now the send link command does nothing. It still works perfectly in IE6 which I seldom use. I also eradicated Firefox from my system including profile and reinstalled without success.
I am not sure how or when this happened as I do not use this feature daily. Is there some registry or file type entry I could make to get this back?
Thanks

I personally dislike IE 6 as it is slow and does not always load the entire page. I use Firefox 2.0.0.20 and visited You Tube earlier and saw no such warning. Another thing, you can download a user agent switcher that adds into the tools so you can spoof the website. I was not using it when I went to You Tube.

No luck, another cold boot and restart failure made me decide to uninstall KernelEX. Just not stable on my otherwise stable system. Great project, hope I can use it in the future. The BIOS startup mentioned before I believe was something else as I shutdown an unintended restart.

I maybe spoke too soon. It seems that every cold boot, I get a blank desktop with a working mouse, but nothing else. When I restart, everything is back to normal. This has happened several times. This morning, I was greeted by the BIOS screen and exiting from that, the blank screen. I will try putting all of my startup programs in compatibility mode and see if that fixes it.

I decided to try a reinstall and this time it worked with no apparent problems so far.

I installed Kernel EX version 4.0 RC2 today and it rendered my computer useless. All I had was a blank desktop with a mouse pointer I could move around. I was able to uninstall it from safe mode and I also had an image I made just in case. I do have the required unicows.dll file installed so what else may have gone wrong?
Thanks
Moved post from Windows 98 discussion group to here and responded to RetroOS questions.
- What version of Windows do you have? 98SE
- Do you have any older version of KernelEx already installed? If so, was/did it uninstall correctly? This is my first attempt.
If you are running Windows 98SE:
- Do you have an older version of Revolutions Pack 7 or earlier installed? No
- Do you have MDGx's 98SE2ME installed? No
- Do you have the unofficial service pack 2 or 3 installed? No, an older version of sp1.
- Have you installed soporific's Auto-Patcher 98SE? No
Please post version and date of following files:
kernel32.dll 4.0 RC2
shell32.dll 4.72.3812.600, 1/2/2000
gdi32.dll 4.10.2227, 1/2/2000
gdi.exe 4.10.2227, 1/2/2000
explorer.exe 4.72.3612.1700, 1/29/1999

There are several different coupon printer software companies. It turns out that the one I wanted to use this time had support down to ME. Others only go down to 2000. Some install files, some work by active X. I am not really familiar with how these work, but couldn't a person just make copies of the coupon that they printed? If you want more grocery coupons from newspapers, all you have to do is get more papers. I have a USB printer, so that is not it.

Font and icon settings
in Windows 7
Posted
There are a lot of settings such as you stated except font style in this location: right click on the desktop, choose Personalize, Window Color Custom, Advanced Appearance Settings. Click on the "Item" drop down box or just click on the actual item. I would not recommend it as it lets you know if the icon is a shortcut or that actual program itself.
