  1. so after doing some research and trying several other things i updated the bios to the laptop and went into the HAL options during windows setup. i did both of these steps simultaniously so i'm not quite sure, but something fixed the problem i was having. this is the link i found about hal. i dont even know if this has anything to do with my problem but something fixed it.. http://www.theeldergeek.com/shutdown_issues_in_xp.htm
  2. hey, sorry i didn't already include that info. the cd is a oem win xp pro, and i'm only doing a single partition. i am not using the dell windows cd that came with the laptop.
  3. i am having some trouble with an unnattended cd i'm using. before we get started, i've used it to install windows on my desktop (which i'm using right now) and it worked flawlessly. however when i try to use it on my laptop, in part 1 of setup when the screen is blue and the initial drivers are being loaded when it gets up to the part that lets me select/delete/create a partition the latptop just shuts off. i've tried selecting a different combination of options.. and just leaving it be for a few minutes. still the problem persists. after searching for a solution i found a couple people with the same problem, but no resolve. if anyone has any idea as to what my be causing this or what i can do to prevent it please let me know thank you in advance for the help ps before anyone suggests overheating, that is definatly not the problem, i have the laptop proped up with a fan blowing under it
  4. at the intial portion of the windows xp set up after you press any button to launch the installation of windows xp, i am having a little problem at the portion of the blue startup screen where it says "windows is starting up" my machine just powers down. i see it loading all of the drivers before this with no problem. also i was able to use the same disk that i made in Virtual PC and installed successfully. any ideas on what this problem could be? thanks again.
  5. well last i digged up an unnattended install that i made months ago. i copied the winnt.sif exactly only changing the username/key. this time i was able to install with no problem.. wierd. this is the only thing i changed about the disk. now it works fine. thanks for the help anyway ;SetupMgrTag [Data] AutoPartition=0 MsDosInitiated="0" UnattendedInstall="Yes" AutomaticUpdates=yes [Unattended] UnattendMode=FullUnattended OemSkipEula=Yes OemPreinstall=Yes TargetPath=\WINDOWS UnattendSwitch="yes" WaitForReboot="No" [GuiUnattended] AdminPassword=* EncryptedAdminPassword=NO OEMSkipRegional=1 TimeZone=35 OemSkipWelcome=1 [UserData] ProductKey=XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX FullName="Default User" OrgName="*" ComputerName=Administrator [Display] BitsPerPel=32 Xresolution=1280 YResolution=1024 [TapiLocation] CountryCode=1 Dialing=Tone AreaCode=718 [Branding] BrandIEUsingUnattended=Yes [URL] Home_Page=google.com Search_Page=google.com [Proxy] Proxy_Enable=0 Use_Same_Proxy=1 [Identification] JoinWorkgroup=WORKGROUP [Networking] InstallDefaultComponents=Yes [Components] msmsgs=off msnexplr=off
  6. i am working with windows professional slipstreamed disk that i created. i use Virtual PC to test the image before i use it on my system. however i made a few changes to my winnt.sif file and now after windows completly installs and restarts, the first boot Win XP loading screen just locks up indefinatly. i'm not sure what could be causing this. the changes i made in my winnt file were to stop the initial setup screen when windows boots for the frist time from starting up. thanks in advance for any help. ;SetupMgrTag [Data] AutoPartition=1 MsDosInitiated="0" UnattendedInstall="Yes" [Unattended] UnattendMode=FullUnattended OemSkipEula=Yes OemPreinstall=No TargetPath=\WINDOWS WaitForReboot="No" [GuiUnattended] AdminPassword=* EncryptedAdminPassword=NO OEMSkipRegional=1 TimeZone=35 OemSkipWelcome=1 [UserData] ProductKey=XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX FullName="Default User" OrgName="" ComputerName=DefaultComp [TapiLocation] CountryCode=1 [Branding] BrandIEUsingUnattended=Yes [URL] Home_Page=http://www.google.com Search_Page=http://www.google.com [Proxy] Proxy_Enable=0 Use_Same_Proxy=1 [Identification] JoinWorkgroup=WORKGROUP [Networking] InstallDefaultComponents=Yes [Components] msnexplr=off
  7. awesome, so all i really need is: KB873374.exe /Q:A /R:N lastly, i put the cmdlines.txt and the gditool.cmd in the c:\xpcd\$oem$ directory. thanks again
  8. Question #2 now the switch needed for the above registry tweak looks like this: KB873374.exe /Q:A /R:N (HALT BOX) what is the "(halt box)" about? do i jsut put a space after the ":N" and then do a Ctrl + Backspace ? this part also has me still a little confused.
  9. -Alanoll also i think that the hotfix thread is in need of notification, since the hotfix is listed there. it's just that people starting out like me do not know exactly what certain things mean. thanks again
  10. Wow, thanks a lot, that's exactly what i needed. i don't use a CMDLINES.TXT, however, i think you provided me with enough information to get this working thanks so much oh yea, i owe u a dollar

  13. hey, my problem is; i'm not sure where to put regestry entries in my unattended instal cd. i noticed i needed to do this when i was slipstreaming all of the hotfixes. i tried the "/integrate" method, and succeded in integrating everythign but 1 hotfix. the one that didnt work was KB873374.exe aka [Microsoft GDI+ Detection Tool] the entries i need to add are: REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\GdiDetectionTool" /v "GDITool" /t REG_DWORD /d "00000001" /f now, my main question is: where do i put that on my slipstreamed disk? i have worked on the disk on the c:\xpcd dir and i have no clue where to add that. help would be appriciated thanks in advance
  14. did i do it right?
