  1. hi.. i had a problem with my modem cause of a corrupted driver. after trying all possible solutions(reinstall driver, get updated driver etc.)..i was able to solve it by simply "repairing" xp. on the repair process, i encountered a popup window looking for the file viaagp.sys. since i dunno where to look for it i decided to cancel it and proceed with the repair. it all went smoothly..the modem issue was resolved after the repair but now the display adapter was gone in the device manager. and i cant even load any driver to it since xp doesn't recognize/detect it. tried in the hidden devices but nothing i find. tried reading all the solutions by way of googling but still i cant find an answer since most answers i found was they just reformatted their drives. is there any way that i can solve this? thanks in advance! display adapter: nvidia geforce4 mx400 se 64mb mobo: ECS L7VTA2 (VIA chipset) OS: winxp pro sp2

  4. hi there! just arrived home from a friend who asked for help regarding his pc not opening up applications. after attempting several solutions..all failed! pc specs: AMD-athlon 2.0+, 128MB DDR, 64MB AGP, 40GB HDD running winxp sp2 the problem: except from "my computer", "my documents", "internet explorer" & "recycle bin", all other icons are not opening up applications even if u directly open it from the source folder (x:/program files/program name). and also when trying to open up icons in the control panel except for "folder options" none shows up, also include icons in the start menu. in short, everytime i tried opening a program/application this message shows up --- "file not associated with this program (program path).....go to folder options control panel to blahblahblah". if i try to run commands like msconfig and regedit, still the same. and some startup items aren't loading like "cleanit!", "rainlendar", etc. solutions that failed: 1. go to "folder options" and restore all defaults. 2. go to safe mode and login as admin but cant change any settings cause that message keeps showing up. 3. right-clicked every icon and checked the "target file" and even clicked "find target" just to make sure including the path. 4. tried creating a new account but i can't since clicking "USER ACCOUNTS" does nothing but show the message. 5. tried SYSTEM RESTORE but failed since it also shows up that message. 6. lastly..i tried repairing xp but when it comes to the point of "installing devices" (34 minutes remaining) a window will popup saying what prog to use to open up "rundll32.exe", "regsrvr32.exe", logonblahblah.exe" and more stuffs which i dont see in a normal setup or repair. so i tried cancelling every window that pops out and at last the setup finishes but as i expected same problem. i had one solution that opened up applications from the icons on the desktop..by right-clicking the icon and clicking "Run as.." then removing the check on "Protect my computer from.....blahblahblah" and *p00f*! the application/program opened but thats just from the icons on the desktop but as far as all other icons concerned same message will appear. any ideas on how to fix this? i'm close on reformatting the drive but there are a lot of important docs there which he had no backup. can you guys give me any idea on how or why this had happen and if it still possible to fix it. how? please help us. thanks in advance and more power!
  5. i got stylexp running in stable condition until yesterday when styles doesn't load up. icons, logons, bootscreen are all good except for the visual styles. after tries of resolving and reboots i found out that the "use visual styles on windows and buttons" under performance options is left uncheck to my surprise. so checking it back gives me the style i wanted but after reboot it switches back to classic view and the option "use visual styles..." is again unchecked. but if i checked it and use the default themes (blue, green, silver) and reboot, it's working fine. but if i use a stylexp theme then reboot, it switches back to the classic view and again the option is left unchecked. stylexp got an option of "load themes at startup" so i checked it but it slows down my booting cause it always loads the themes at startup and it wasn't like this before wherein at startup it's automatically loaded until this abnormal behavior. any idea why this option is always left unchecked after reboot? it's not like this before. thanks in advance!
  6. thanks to the both of u for reading and giving your thoughts on this. they are very much appreciated! i got it all running back again smoothly! the two OS are stable now again! soldier1st: i did what u said as a last option...same result - choices are there but still cant boot with win98. but it gave me the idea. thanks dude! jaclaz: i have noticed that bootsect.dos so i tried "googling" for it and it gave me the idea of what to do. thanks bro! solution: 1) since win98 is screwed i tried RE-INSTALLING win98se..so now it only boots to win98. 2) since it just boots 98 i tried REPAIRING xp with a slipstreamed SP2 cd courtesy of google. 3) w00t! i'm back and running smooth again! thank you for the ideas guys..i'm sure i'll hang around here often now. cheers! DOS
  7. hi..my apologies if this topic was discussed already but i tried searching here but i found none. as i was "googling" ii bump in to this forums searching for answers so im kinda new here. i got a dual OS running on my single hard drive. windows98se on primary partition(FAT32) and winxp sp2 on extended partition(NTFS). i've been using this type for about a year now and its working just fine. i used to let the kids use win98 and i'm the only one that uses the xp. but since kids mess the win98 really bad yesterday i was forced to format c: and replace the existing win98se with a fresh copy of win98se. i used to just RE-INSTALL win98se everytime kids mess with it and it's just fine but this time it didn't solve the errors so i decided to do a clean install (format c: and install a fresh win98se) for the first time. now the problem begins...THE OS CHOICES ARE GONE! it boots directly to win98se and bypasses the xp. i cant log on to xp anymore and all my imporatnt files are there. i bump into a site where it says all i have to do is go to recovery console and execute fixboot, copy ntldr and ntdetect, bootcfg /rebuild, input identifier and edit the boot.ini file and im back to normal. to my surprised it worked! OS choices are back and i was able to log-on to xp and save some files but when i tried getting in to win98..it's the one screwed now. i cant get in after choosing win98 in the OS choices. it says I/O Error with some lines below that looks like this - multi(0)blahblahbla/windows/bootsect.dos are there any ways on how i can get back the two OS running again smoothly like before? thanks for reading and thank you in advance!
