  1. I have not slept. I was up all night trying to make a cd. i did get it to boot, but it had a fatal catalog error?? I would guess the file you were referring to was the setupp.ini ???? I'm not sure it worked though. I used some settings from my friends XP disk (like the m.img file) and most the i386 file - but i used the rest from my recover CD. an interesting thing, the Win51 and Win511c on the retail CD was for xp home, but i discovered on my restore cd that it is win51 and win511p and it is the professional version. how could toshiba PE this to be home edition? any good sources i could try to PE my own disk and understand the file structure so i don't have fatal errors? i'm getting less hopeful of recovering my disk as my laptop hangs for product cd ami
  2. my lap top crashed. (b/c of an office patch downloading) toshiba and microsoft told me to "borrow" a friends xp disk so i could at least boot (i could not boot in any form using f8) a friend lent me her xp i tried to do a console restore (my brain is fried sorry can't think of the name) but when i was at the command promp, i could not do the cm thing so i thought i would tri to do a repair install so i could at the very least back up my files and do a restore w/ my wonderful restore cd b/c i have oem but while doing that, system asked for product key - i tried the one on the bottom of my lap top but it didnt' work. my f riend did not want me to use her product key (toshiba told me i would need HER product key) and that is fine - but how can i back up my files??????? i don't want to do anythign illegal and can't really afford retail right now. can i slip stream my friends xp so i can reinstall to back up? or will i have product key issues? i would try to call microsoft, but their closed right now i've been reading for hours .
  3. nope. it does nothing. i can't safe mode, can't try to restart from an earlier time - nada nothing but this black screen w/ a file missing or corrupted windows xp could not start b/c the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\system32\config\system toshiba didn't even know if me getting a xp disk would even help me. but i just want to back up my files.
  4. I have read and read and my head is spinning from the confusion I am trying to make a bootable cd for my toshiba laptop (neither microsoft or toshiba will take responisibliity ) i downloaded a patch for Office 2003, it downloaded, went to restart, but shut off - i turned it on and had a black screen w/ an error saying files were corrupted... Toshiba says i have to just to a system restore.... but i have files I MUST BACK UP FIRST. I have been reading about slipstreaming and i'm just confused. Microsoft and Toshiba both told me i had to find someone w/ an xp disk b/c it cam preinstalled on my laptop - i can't use the floppy disks b/c i don't have a floppy drive. and the toshiba restoration disk will only make my computer like new a friend of mine lent me their dell xp reintallation disk and i have been following instructions from: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=23915&st=10 so i will have a bootable disk (though i pray i never have to use it again!) I tried to download spyspunks srvpack.in_ and srvpack.dl_ but it won't let me also, it said to delete the folder SVCPACK folder - but i did not have this folder and i have show hidden views enabled i've also read about all these patches and what to change... and I just don't know WHAT to download anymore i'm so confused. I am a newbie and i apologize if this posted somewhere else. i just want to get my computer up. thanks for any help ami
