Dell seems to be the manufacture 'we' have the least problem with (we have about 4000 PC's in total). BUT...................... You are better off building your own ............most manufacturers PC's have celeron chips or shared video memory, slow RAM chips etc so the 'plebs' think they are getting a v. cheap computer.

Alcohol 120% for me, just because it has ALCOHOL in the name.....

It could be down to settings on a NIC. I'd check all settings are correct and make sure Automatic metric is enabled. (Gave us a hell of a problem with the whole network) Also is the HDD of the share/server being used by anything else when you install office? Could be a firewall problem... Just a few things to check out but it could be anything.... Taggs

Anti-Virus to become obsolete.
Taggs replied to rhythmnsmoke's topic in Malware Prevention and Security
I have read most of the posts on this thread and it seems (royal) we will not be satisfied until we see it. If it does what is claimed that's great for everyone! (Big and Small) But I don't see the point in arguing with rhythmnsmoke wheather it can or can't do what he claims as it gets nowhere. I will sit and wait for a release I can test/play with............... Until then I will keep using and updating my AV I think this thread should be closed..... -

I would recommend spending as much as you can on the video card (maybe save some money from a lesser motherboard or smaller HDD). If your Video card can't keep up, your gaming experience will be pretty lousy.

I’m not sure if I use both thumbs or not so I had to type this to find out. Wow I only use my right thumb and thats for the space bar. Guess I'll cut my left one off if it's not needed.

I've used several versions of PartitionMagic and had no problems with it , but if you read the instructions it does say data may become corrupt or lost. I suspect this is the case also for Partiition Commander 9. Live partitioning can be a risky business and I recommend backing up any important data you have first.

Hi Egrath, I'm talking about having 2 single port ethernet cards. I remember reading something a long time ago about how the OS handles these (send one kind of data on one card and another on the second) but I can't remember what or where I read this. I know all about NFT, TLB (we use this) and SLB (we dont have switch-assissed boxes ) but thanks for the info. Anybody else know about multiple un-teamed NIC's ?

We have had a problem with our back-ups on SOME servers with teamed NIC's. I don't want to get into the in's and out's of this in this thread. It transposes my manager wants me to right a report on ADV and DisADV of teamed and NON-teamed NIC's I have found info on Teaming and exactly how it works but I am currently unable to find info on dual NIC's (not teamed) and how they work. (NIC's are on the same network segment) Can anybody give me some info or piont me in the right direction please. Thanks Taggs

We back up to panthers with LT02 tapes at the mo, but we are shortly moving on to back-up on HDD's in our SAN.

@Mason I think you need to read up a little more about RIS. The way you think it works is one method it can use. They way you have described is how I have my RIS server set up but no need for a boot disk, although I could go that route with it if I wished.
-
jpatto, the link below is my documentation for setting up a RIS server. http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=36833&st=10 Not sure what you are trying to say here? When you connect to the domain the server stores your GUID in the computer profile on AD so it knows the PC next time it connects to the domain. When connecting to a server you boot using the NIC (PXE service) which looks for a BINL service on the server side. This copies the OS install files to the local disk and then it installs from the local disk. I hope this is of some help. As the others say it will remove data from your other partition but using the sif file you can stop this. Taggs

Is it possible to install from my Network
Taggs replied to Bad boy Warrior's topic in Windows 2000/2003/NT4
If you are after OS installs, have a look at this documentation! http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=36833&st=10 I hope it helps. -
I would STRONGLY recommend on using a password to login, especially if you use the internet! The harder it is for them to get in the better.

Over a year ago for me. I don't fill my PC with $H*T (It's bad for the circuit boards you know!! and when it hits the fans... ) so I don't need to keep rebuilding it!
-
It does not quite fit what you want but have a play with this..... go to insert menu /use insert picture.... bare with me..... Now select ALL cells (click cell above 1 and left of A).. Now click format....cells....protection and clear the locked tab. Now select Cell/s that cover the picture ie A2 to C5. Now click format....cells....protection and check the locked tab. Now click Tools.....protection....protect work sheet. Haypresto...you can not move the picture but you can still edit the work sheet. Welcome to MSFN

Deep Freeze - Protect your Hardrive from changes
Taggs replied to Zilevoli's topic in Software Hangout
@Nick47 I'm not sure if this is how it works but what I think happens is..... It creates a second FAT table and uses this for its disk access. Any changes made to the disk are done on the 'clone' fat table but files left as is! So when you reboot it just clones the original FAT table again and off you go. Not sure if its really how it works but this is the theory we came up with afew years ago when we first looked into using deep freeze. -
Deep Freeze - Protect your Hardrive from changes
Taggs replied to Zilevoli's topic in Software Hangout
I haven't read all the posts on here, but just to let you know we have used Deep Freeze on our public access PC's and had no problem with it. It's worked just fine. Just need to remove BIOS boot to floppy and add BIOS password. Reboot PC every morning and heypresto, a fully functioning PC again after a day of abuse from the general public. M$ profiles and security, how ever much we locked it down, did not do the job. Somebody always managed to do something on the PC. Now it's locked down, to stop wouldbe "hackers" and the others can play away as much as they like and a simple reboot fixes any changes made. It gets the thumbs up from me -
@it_ybd Sorry mate, I work (!?!?!??!!) for Govement in the midlands and I don't pull the strings for recruiting otherwise I'd be on alot more than the chocolate buttons I get paid. BTY what is this IP thingy you talk about? Intel Processor Intelligent People Inky paper LOL

@SiMoNsAyS Nice App. I think I'll start and use it.
-
Sounds like you are still installing manually? Have you thought about using RIS to install the OS? That way you dont need Floppy for NIC drivers it's done over the LAN. How do you connect to the LAN without NIC drivers I hear you say? All 98 compliant NIC's have the ability to boot from the LAN. Have a look at my documentation for setting up RIS! http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=36833&st=10 You could also create a boot CD with Bios updates (Just a thought!)

This is not intended for people who use something other than media player, so please don't post "I use this because it's better!" why is it not on the list
