Ok, it turned out to be i tried running the 32 bit version (x86) amd64 fixed it. Thanks heaps! I ran diskpart and it could only also find the usb so... yeah, crossing fingers to see if Microsoft can get my data (will get my data......)

The Surface is AFAIK/AFAICR UEFI, is the PE on USB prepared for and tested on a UEFI machine? I haven't used WinPE before and i'm not that techincal I just heard it coudl help view the drive. I knowwhen i boot my main computer i can either boot uefi usb or jus tteh usb but only the usb section boots WinPE so that means it cant do it?. I just followed the guide on the microsoft website to put WinPE on a usb. what do I have to do to make it UEFI?

I have installed WinPE from the adk onto a usb drive as my surface has Surface Pro 2 seems to have failed. When it is turned on it seemingly goes to a "bios" screen which has very little options and does not run windows 8.1. I assume either the ssd has failed or has been disconnected but i want to try and access any data before sending it in for "repairs". so WinPE is on teh usb but it seems to ignore it and go staright to the bios screen with no option to boot form usb. it isn't the usb as it correctly works on my other machine. What can I do?
