  1. Hi people,

can anyone enlighten me as to how to play ms dos games in XP? I've formatted a floppy to read ms-dos (ballistic game) but when I inset the disc (A drive) is comes up with command prompt: :A/..........

what do I tell the command prompt?

Are there any websites specific to this?

    Cheers

    Mitch

  2. Normal logic doesn't apply to HP imbedded Windows XP.

Start the process in safe mode. When you get a black screen turning the PC on press F8 and go into safe mode. You'll find the system restore there. You'll have 2 options:

    1. System recovery for MS, and

    2. System recovery for HP. There are no restore points in safe mode for HP so a full destructive recovery is the only option. This allows you to go back to factory settings.

I agree with you that engaging HP on the Help line is both expensive and fruitless as their technicians are mere plebes.

    Best of luck

  3. HI

Svchost.exe can be an area harbouring undected viruses that your installed antivir/mal programs haven't detected. I would suggest using some more additional antivir scanning to assure yourself that you don't have a vir/mal problem

    just a thought

    cheers

  4. Since you scanned with MS Antispyware go to their spynet site at:http://www.spynet.com/ and see if you can get some help from this site

    cheers

  5. OK yes I checked that site just now n something's wrong with it. Susan try something basic as well using yr START MY COMPUTER Properties, click on C Drive and go to tools and look for the 2 entries to fix fille errors and repair bad sectors

    Just a thought

    Cheers

  6. Thanks for all yr input but here is the site that fixed the problem: http://members.driverguide.com/driver/detail.php? driverid=52534.

This is specific for HP so if anyone needs help accessing this site contact me for user name and password.

It also comes with a driverguide toolkit that allows you to:

    # Get detailed information about your installed drivers.

    # Backup your drivers in case of emergency.

    # Search the best driver sources for updates to your specific drivers.

    # Identify unknown devices.

    # Get detailed information about the manufacturer of your device.

    # Backup and search for drivers for non-internet connected computers.

    # Backup and search for drivers for all computers on your LAN.

    # Compare your saved drivers to your installed drivers.

    # Follow an easy step by step process for finding the best driver.

    # Get device manufacturer links and contact info.

I got this info from HP Total Care. Finally they answered one of basic my tech questions!

    Thanks everyone for yr input

    Cheers

  7. Dr Watson is the PC repair tool of HP embedded XP systems (both Office and Home).

    I suggest he either:

    a. get the relevant patches from HP at:http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/siteHome

    b. Or ring their hotline, or

    c. go to START, RUN and enter Dr Watson to see what the problem is. He should be able to access Dr Watson by going to his START, ALL PROGRAMS, HEWITT PACKARD, HP TOOLS and if DR Watson is shown run this application if not revert back to (a) or (B)

    Cheers from a HP detester

  8. I had the same problem. First clean your system of any virus/adware/malware. Then repair using the XP tool in properties of your C drive under tools, click auto fix file system and scan & attempt recovery of bad sectors. Once your happy with this try it again. If problem exists you'll need the appropriate codec. Try this one from Major Geeks:http://majorgeeks.com/download4361.html. You can uninsatll this if it doen't fix the prob!

One problem I have found trying to view MS Media (10) files on Firefox is that some of my sites the movie files are themselves not functioning. If it is a yahoo site then remember they have a time limit on how long you can view the sites. I think they run in cycles of 4 hours. Try these sites on IE and see if you hv the same problem.

MS will tell you to search for a codec anyhow but are quite elusive when it comes to solutions to MS mp10. Try running Real Player as your default and skip 10 if u still hv the prob.

    Cheers

  9. I guess they call it consumer's choice. I don't find Firefox crash hot especially with a download manager that's very slow. I've whacked my Yahoo page onto the Firefox to give it some umph!

I use 4 browers because I find I can multi task. I don't like to put all eggs in one basket and I agree that DAP is an old downloader but I don't want to pay for something when I can get it for free!

    Thanks for the info :P

  10. First, it's not switching into safe mode, that requires a reboot. If it's not rebooting, it's not going into safe mode.

My first guess is that you have active desktop turned on. I've seen this on 98 machines but not XP, but that doesn't mean it can't happen.

Right click on the desktop then choose "Properites" > "Desktop" > "Customize Desktop" > "Web". Make sure nothing is selected.

However, I don't think that's it, just something to check.

no that didn't do the trick but tks anyway

    Les

  11. how? just your color goes all crappy? or does it actually not allow u on the net & all the other stuff safe mode does?

The colour goes all fuzzy but I can still surf and use the PC same as when u r in safe mode. I have Adware n Spybot installed and yesterday had the MS patch for malicious malware updated by MS. I scanned the system as I always do and nothing found.

I'll run "housecall" from Trendmicro n see if they can detect anything.

My system is 2 years old and I seem to remember I had this problem when the system was virginal.

I still feel that when u buy a pre-installed HP XP home PC (522a pavilion mx70) that they (HP) manipulate Windows to the detriment of the OS's functioning.

I notice that with very new update from MS somehow something goes wrong albeit the CDROM drive goes missing, switching into safe mode,etc,etc...

I can't run a clean instal of XP as the system was preinstalled and I don't hv the CD.

I just wonder if anyone else running a HP hacked XCP home has similar problems?

    Cheers

  12. HI people,

whilst surfing my Yahoo groups ocassionallly the system switches over to safe mode. This happens on Firefox. Any suggestions? I have home XP (HP system)
