  1. The shuttle mobo bios can and does control it by slowing down the fastest chipset to match . same as with an IDE setup. NOTE that xp sp1 and sp2 have (in fact I have run NT and 2000) with No problems. Win 98 does seem to have have a distinct problem dealing with memory. Thats what i am curious about all references to memory management only deal with quantity never speed.

  2. I read all the posts and threads on the vcache and related memory issues. I have the unofficial SP for win98. Here is the problem. I run a Shuttle AN35 I have 3 sticks of memory 1 512 PC2700 1 512 PC2100 and 1 256 PC2100. I have the Maxpagefile or whatever set to limit the threshold below the 1GB limit imposed by Win98. The problem is win98 "cycles" whenever 2 different speed rated sticks are used concurrently. I have tested them in all possible combos and it works fine as long as I don't mix the PC2700 with ANYTHING else. (when i get the spare $, I'll simply add another PC2700 512) unitl then is there anyway to force win98 to see or lock the PC2700 as a PC2100? XP has no problems with this as i run xp1 and 2 and have run 2000 and NT server as well at 1 point or another.

  3. Open WinImage.

    Insert the first floppy disk into your computer. Go to Disk -> Read Disk (Ctrl+R)

    If including a second floppy insert it into your drive. Go to Image -> Change format... and select 2.88 MB. Next select Image -> Inject... Browse to your floppy drive, select all of the files, and then choose Open. It will ask if you want to inject the files, choose Yes.

    Let's double check that with all this tampering we haven't messed with the boot sector. Go to Image -> Boot Sector Properties... and press the Windows 98 button. If the disk is obviously DOS oriented, you could try MSDOS 6.2 if the Windows 98 does not work.

    Now save the file: File -> Save. Give the image file a name and save as an IMA file by selecting "Image file (*.IMA)" in the "Save as type:" drop-down box .

  4. sorry for the delay in responding. I have been building the unattended AIO-DVD from Dec till now. SAME thing when doing the dual system install. I used to routinely install win 98 and then XP without a problem, but something has changed. Last night I used the AIO to load win98SE still recycles. Then used killdisk to kill every byte track on the hard disk. Reinstalled win98se SOLO same thing. Added XPSP2 on top leaving it as a FAT32 partition (yes only 1 partition ie contains c:windows and c:XPSP) never got the dual boot win98SE of course fails to load. Is it the dos emulation mode creating the problem? IF so why did it used to work and no longer works.

  5. Thanks guys thats what I needed. jaclaz it was your post i was thinkling about. spent 3 hours last night and couldn't find it. found it in 20 minutes this morn. Sleep and all shall be reveled.

  6. I pulled down a zip file of win98 stripped down to 7megs. Now I can't find the site, one similar to it, or any ref to anything like it (excluding 98lite) anybody able to point me in the right direction? Not including networked installs. This is a stand alone system I have on my AIO dvd.

  7. Thats the thing. My files match flyakites guide which includes the changes to the auto.exe and config This is the autoexec in 98se:

    :EXT

    %RAMD%:\extract /y /e /l %RAMD%: ebd.cab > NUL

    echo The diagnostic tools were successfully loaded to drive %RAMD%.

    echo.

    LH %ramd%:\MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001 /L:W

    echo.

    set CDROM=FOO23

    FINDCD.EXE

    if "%CDROM%"=="FOO23" goto QUIT

    cls

    echo Now installing Windows 98 SE

    echo.

    echo Loading...

    path=%RAMD%:\;a:\;%CDROM%:\SETUP\98SE\WIN98\

    SETUP.EXE /IE /NF

    echo.

    GOTO QUIT

    Doesn't the LH%ramd%:\MSCDEX....ensure the cd drivers are still in place. I know I can still manually access and in fact continue the install.

  8. I am trying to build a multi boot DVD with DOS 7.1, Win98SE, and Xp Pro SP2 per flyakite's guide. I have read all the guide plus GOSH's guide and thread, plus various posts and threads here at MSFN.

    The Problem: the XP segment works perfect using either cdshell or diskemu, but win 98 stops at: Now installing Win98 SE loading... bad command or file name and returns to the a:\> prompt. Dos 7.1 (the iso version obtained from http://newdos.yginfo.net/msdos71.htm) stops at: ms dos setup cannot locate the sources files...etc

    The fact that xp works perfect suggests that the cdshell and diskemu are working as advertised and the nt setup is correct. The fact that win98/dos initializes but freezes at setup suggests that I failed to realize to define a source path correctly somewhere. I modified the autoexec per flyakites guide and the layout is verbatium per the guide. As no one else mentions any problems with ima files, I feel I have failed to see a very simple step SOMEWHERE concerning ima files.

    Also flyakite mentioned extracting the Microsoft Corporation.img using ISOBuster and renaming it to a DAT file in the (boot sectors section). Doesn't this only pertain to NT technology ima's?

  9. :wacko: Had a problem for 2 months now. running win 98se with xp sp1 on top. normal op ok. even installed linux on top of that. for some now forgotten reason had to reinstall.

    since then (using 2 different cd copies of 98 and xp), format disk (even used kill disk) when its done with the base install of win 98 fat32 (even kill disked fixed boot and mbr) win98 gets to the win 98 screen and then cycles (restarts) repeatly. last night I went ahead and added xp sp 1 anyway and it to recycles. what gives? am now running xp sp1 solo.
