  1. ok, little by little it gets better. i updated my directx. i thought i aready had the latest version since i have the automatic updates enabled bho... anyway, now i can hear the sound for the second and third voice but not the first one (Microsoft Synthesizer). besides i don't have in my whole registry the voice Gmfilepath you mentioned. that's probably why a still get from dxdiag the error "No General MIDI DLS file was specified in the registry" EDIT: ok i manually inserted that missing piece of my registry Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectMusic] "GMFilePath"="C:\\WINDOWS\\SYSTEM32\\DRIVERS\\GM.DLS" and now it works just fine. tnz a lot johnhc, you were really helpful
  2. ok, i solved the problem, or at least a part of it. it seems like i missed the file gm.dls (it's probably the general midi dls file dxdiag mentioned) in c:\windows\system32\drivers. i searched for "gm.dl_" in both nlited and not-nlited versions of my installation cd and it wasn't there O_o bho... anyway, i found it in an old XP cd, i expanded it (expand gm.dl_ gm.dls) and put it in c:\windows\system32\drivers. dxdiag keeps giving me the previous message and i still can't hear anything in the "test directsound" but i can finally hear the midi files with wmp. tnz a lot for everything PS: i don't think there's any difference in searching with or without *
  3. ok here are my screenshots: from my running windows: from BOTH my nlited and not-nlited xp cd install yes i hear nothing from any. in the "notes" below there's written: - Nessun file General MIDI DLS specificato nel Registro di sistema. - Risultati del test di DirectMusic: Test riusciti. translation: - no General MIDI DLS file specified in the system registry. (or something like that) - DirectMusic test results: all tests were successful. yes the other audio works on my machine (test in dxdiag on audio tab (not music) is fine). yes i ran nlite multiple times, but the previous ones i only added the update packs and didn't remove anything. i removed components only at the end and all together.
  4. here my "last session.ini" when i run dxdiag, in the music tab, when i run the test "Test DirectSound" i can't hear anything, even if it gives me "Test passed". i suppose it's due to the midi support that i removed, am i right? (it's not a volume problem) I don't know what this does mean, could you explain me exactly what i have to do? Thanks for helping Ultima Sessione.ini
  5. hi, almost a year ago a installed a lited version of winxp. amongst the removed components there was the "midi support", now i need it. is there any way to install that component? if not, is it possible to restore a lited version of winxp with another lited winxp that includes that component without formatting and all? sorry for my bad english and thanks a lot
