How to identify the word files created in Windows or Mac Operating System?

I need to find out the correct version of microsoft word files (that is 2000 or 2003 or 2007 etc). Could you please advise me how to find out the version via programmatically (or) Is there any other third party tool available for to find out the version. Thanks for looking into this.
