I know this topic is a little bit old but a couple of weeks ago i had a similar problem with an old compaq notebook from the year 2000. This notebook was a gift from a friend.
Machine specs:
Intel Celeron-A 400 Mhz
64 MB RAM
1 GB Harddisk
On that notebook windows 2000 was installed together with office 2000. Nothing else, even not a virus scanner. On that machine outlook needed round about 5-7 minutes to start. Even if you are patient this is a long time.
So i decided to run Windows NT 4.0 Workstation on that machine.
Biggest problem was usb because nt 4.0 has no native support and ms refuses support for nt 4.0 see here: Windows NT 4.0 does not support Universal Serial Bus.
But a Dell driver Everythingusb.com works for me. OK, it is only usb 1.1 but better than nothing.
This laptop is running fine as a typewriter and my outlook 98 starts within 30 seconds.

you have a high chance that your files are NOT being accessible ... even when the certification server is on a different machine and your backup is not damaged in any way.
get informed about efs ... then you know why no one is answering your question(s). don't get me wrong efs is secure ... a little bit too secure from my point of view.
i suggest truecrypt for your purposes with a container file.

My Rig: Quadcore, 8GB RAMI've been running XP x64 with a standard Core 2 Duo system and 6GB of ram for just about a year now, and I see no reason to change, upgrade, or downgrade.
2 out of 20 games won't work.I'm completely satisfied with XP x64, I game, view movies, and do plenty of other tasks, without a hitch.I would recommend XP x64 for use.I would recommend XP x64 for use too if you have all drivers.

Check your name resolution. check if your dns/wins/dhcp options settings are correct and everything is working properly.
btw: NetBIOS is *NOT* route-able .... only in conjunction with a wins server.

If someone is missing the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) High Definition Audio driver here ist the solution, MS Support article:
http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb%3Ben...mp;x=8&y=12
To obtain the driver visit e.g. ati.amd.com - from drivers and support - catalyst drivers - go to optional software and select from optional software the Microsoft UAA HDMI Audio driver:
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst...ver=xp-optional

Newer Alcohol 120% versions and Alcohol 52% (mounting only) uses SPTD too.I know DAEMON Tools uses it as a driver for virtual CD/DVD drives. I don't know of any other applications that use it.There are some 'virtual drive' type plugins for TotalCommander that also depend on it.

7. Is there any way the installer can create shortcuts with the advanced property "Run with different credentials" set?
Normally this can be done by e.g. notepad
runas /user:%COMPUTERNAME%\Administrator "%ComSpec% /C notepad"
or with a batch
@ECHO OFF
runas /user:%COMPUTERNAME%\Administrator
Admin.batyou may have a look at this piece iof software : RunasSpc http://www.robotronic.de/runasspcEn.html

Question (Tried to search for the answer).
How close is this guide to working on an x86 OS?
I want to set one up starting with a XP x86 SP3 CD.
At the very least, how did you get a listing of all of the available updates?
Thanks.
The technique isnearly the same, the patches and hotfixes are different of course.
In general Unattended Windows helps and there is an article Getting the hotfixes or you may have a look into this thread.

Kurt_Aust, you restore the Quicklauch via batchfile but the "show desktop" icon is missing.
To restore the quicklauch icon :
- copy from an exsting XP installation the file "Show Desktop.scf" as a template to quicklaunch ...
- or create a new one.
To create a "Show Desktop.scf" make a textfile with this content:
[Shell]
Command=2
IconFile=explorer.exe,3
[Taskbar]
Command=ToggleDesktop... and safe it as "Show Desktop.scf" and place it in AddOns.
Then add it to the RUN1_XP-64.BAT batchfile after :
REM fix Quick Launch toolbar (broken by IE8 installer)
MkDir "%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"
MkDir "%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"New:
Copy "%Source%AddOns\Show Desktop.scf" "%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"
Copy "%Source%AddOns\Show Desktop.scf" "%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"Full:
REM fix Quick Launch toolbar (broken by IE8 installer)
MkDir "%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"
MkDir "%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"
Copy "%Source%AddOns\Show Desktop.scf" "%SystemDrive%\Documents and Settings\Default User\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"
Copy "%Source%AddOns\Show Desktop.scf" "%UserProfile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch"... and you are done.

Kurt_Aust : Please don't misunderstand me. In most cases Movie Maker will work - without the extra codec installation as described by me.
But sometimes it dont work. BTW this is platform-independent. I experienced the same error on x86 machines. From my point of view sometimes some codecs are not able to self-register "right".
Normally the K-Lite Codec Pack works like a charm, as far as i know this is the only codec installation setup who checks exsisting codecs first.
My instruction was meant for problematic cases.
mniceguy81: johnhc is right. DirectX 10 or later will be only aviable on Windows Vista or later. This is the MS-Way to enforce you to buy a new OS. If you really need dx10 or later i recommend to test your game on win7.

First of all i say "hello" to all this contributors to this thread, especially to Kurt_Aust. Your work is fantastic. Thanks a lot. You made my life much much easier.
I think i can contribute a little piece to the unattended dvd.
Topic: Windows Media Player and MS Movie Maker. On one day i want so save a new movie compiled with movie maker but always movie maker gave me an error: can't save, check ram and/or disk space. I have 8 gb ram and several GB (50GB) free ... so this is not the reason. After some investigation i found out this is an codec error problem. In movie maker preferences -> automatic codec download does not work.
Solution: You need the WMP111 XP64bit codecs. They are shipping with the media player.
From wmp11-windowsxp-x64-enu.exe you have to extract the file wmfdist11-64.exe. This file is the codec installation file. Unattended installation goes as usual:
../wmfdist11-64.exe /Q /O /N /Z
i hope this will help someone.
best regards, genu
