  1. Anyone have any ideas?
  2. Hello I have a strange problem on our XP / 2003 based domain. It seems to be whenever I login to a machine (im an administrator) everyone who logs into that machines starts to get messages saying "Adam" is offline. Adam is the name of one of the laptops on the network. It only says its offline if the laptop is switched off but it shouldnt be syncing with that laptop at all, nobody should. Does anyone know how to turn this off? As I said it only happens to me, and everyone who logs into a PC that I have been on. Thnaks in advance for your time.
  3. Thanks a lot I will look into those things you suggested. I wanted to stay away from scripts as mucha s possible.
  4. Hello, I’m new to network management so be kind. I’m looking for something free or open source preferably, that we can install on our sbs server 2003 or on all client machines, that will allow me to remotely manage the workstations on the network. By this I mean, see the hard drives, browse through them add remove files, change registry, see what updates are installed, install updates while the user still uses the machine all without them knowing. I don’t want to see their screen or watch them just run some tasks in the background. It would be nice to take over their computer when needed but only by first popping a message up on their screen that they accept then lets me remotely control it. I have had a quick look at WMI and PowerShell 1.0, but not sure if these are what I need. Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. EDIT: all our client machines are XP
  5. Sorry for the late reply. Thanks for your suggestions, il give it a go now.
  6. Working in a domain and trying to get software to run on a client computer. The software runs fine when an administrator is logged in (i.e. me), but not for the user (gets a runtime 53 error, file not found). I’m sure we have all had this problem before. Last year I had the same problem with another piece of software and I found an application on the internet that ran only when logged in as a user. You selected the software you as trying to run and it told you exactly what files and registry keys it was trying to access. This way I was able to give the users permission to that file / registry key rather than the entire system. Iv forgotten what the software was called. !!!! I have searched high and low and can’t find it. I have tried Microsoft’s Process Monitor but threes 2 problems with it, its too detailed, so I don’t know what the software is running (because it shows you every process that Windows is running) and also it won’t run under a user (even when I try run as). Does anyone know either the software I’m looking for, or an alternative method? Thanks for your help.
  7. Thanks for your reply (only work part time so just read it know that I’m back in work) I will try what you have said but am I right in saying that if I redirect all special folders to the server and disable offline files and disable people from saving to the C drive that this would be a better setup and not cause any problems ? The Excel document that all users access is stored on a network drive so this wouldn’t be affected (would it?) Thanks again.
  8. Thanks for your reply. Every now and then, one machine in particular gives an error mesasge that it failed to sync with "Steve". Now there is a desktop computer called "Steve" on the network so does it mean this? As im new to the network im not sure if someone previously setup the computer to sync with that desktop for a few files. When we click "View files" to see the files being synced, most of the files are coming from "sbs-server\users\Steve" (BTW the user logged in is called Steve) Even when we untick the box to stop it from syncing with "Steve", next time the computer starts its back on with the same problem. (GP ? how can we check this?) Anyway as offline files is only needed to work offline, we should be ok to disable it correct?
  9. Hello, new to the forums and new to server management so please bare with me. Although I plan on doing my MCSA's right now I have basic server knowledge. The environment I am working in has offline files enabled on all desktop and laptop computers. I am pretty sure that it does not need to be enabled on desktop computers and it is causing some problems with one or two machines, so we have decided to disable offline files. Now as im just getting used to the network environment I just wanted some help from anyone here who can confirm what I think is correct. I have looked at the GPO enabled and Desktop redirection seems to be enabled. If I disable Offline files, will everything my users save still be stored on the server? They mostly work of a shared Excel document that is saved on the server so that will be fine, but I’m worried that if I disable offline files, anything they have in other folders around the PC are not going to be backed up. Basically I want all files to be redirected to the server and offline files to only be enabled on laptops., Can anyone help? Thanks for your time in advance. P.S. SBS Server 2003 & XP Clients)
