As the topic says, I want to upgrade my graphic card. Searching the net I found lots of tests, but most of them only interested in gaming performance, which is not interesting for me.
Currently Im using an ATI Radeon 9200 128MB, which is not bad for desktop only. But browsing the net with sites that do have a lot of images it starts bucking and that can be very annoying.
So what AGP-card would you recommend to use with WIN98 Desktop-applications nowadays?
- It should be with passive cooling when possible like the Radeon Ultimate, which I read might get very hot on duty unfortunatelly.
- It should not consume too much power. Are there any graphic cards that use something like AMD cool n quiet? So that the GPU slows down when idle and speeds up when used?

So, my question now is, is it normal for your floppy drive to do a disk check the first time Explorer is opened after a reboot, or is my computer weird for needing InterActual Player to remain installed to prevent it?

Hi Queue,
try this one:
Open SYSTEM PROPERTIES
Than the right TAB which is about PERFORMANCE
Click the button FILESYSTEM
Than goto FLOPPY DISK -Tab
Theres a box you can uncheck to stop Windows from searching the floppy.

I use REGSEEKER and heres my file sizes @ present
User.dat - 533k
System.dat - 3609k
Thats small.
I have Norton System Works installed and I guess at least 2 MB of registry entries come just with this Suite.
any playing around with the registry isnt a good thing!it may look like windows works fine but later on you may find that centein programs or windows programs need them and you wont know why its stuffs up becasue this be a long time after
Im using Eusing Free Registry Cleaner and scanreg /fix for years now. Never had any problems.
A clean small registry is the key to a fast and stable system.
Of course I do regularly backups as well.
Especially before working with registry files its recommended to make a sysbackup, so it can be restored if something is messed up.

OK - Problem Solved!
The Patch "ExplorUp.exe" includes explorer.exe file from WinMe I guess which is version 4.72.3612.1710 and english!
My default explorer.exe is version 4.72.3612.1700 and german
I just reinstalled my old explorer.exe
Do I need explorer.exe 4.72.3612.1710 in german version now?

I found out it is probably this patch which is part of auto-patcher:
Explor98 - Unofficial 256 Color Icons Windows Explorer 4.72.3612.1710that changes start bar language to english.
Can anybody tell me which files are modified by this patch?
Maybe there is an incompatibility with uberskin.exe which I installed before auto-patcher?

Auto-Patcher worked fine for me, as far as I can say for now. The only problem I recognizes, that it sets my startbar language to english (instead of german). All other menus are still in german.
When I was aked to keep files because of a language conflict during Auto-Patcher installation, I always confirmed to keep current german files.
Can anybody tell me how to switch the startbar back to german?
THX in advance (and big thx to all those who worked at the auto-patcher)

First I wanna say THX to all guys, who keep 98 alive
Now here is how I keep my registry clean and small:
I do recomment this free registry cleaner:
http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_cleane...try_cleaner.htm
At the beginning I was careful when handling it, but meanwhile I let him run and delete all strings he finds and thats a lot.
After cleaning you can shrink your registry files by entering:
scanreg /fixin the last line of autoexec.bat.
Restart your computer and it will cleanup your registry, when finished it tells you to restart again, than you have to remove this entry or simply add the "rem" command before it, so it looks like this:
rem scanreg /fixNow lets COMPARE
user.dat = 700 kB
system.dat = 6.100 kB
Check the size of boths files before cleaning and fixing and then you know that Eusing does a good job.
Greets.

Thanks for all the good advice!
I have always been using ATI-Cards so I guess I will stay with ATI and upgrade to a low profile x700 or something similar.
