Ok so this worked and the unattended XP setup now loads the driver.

The issue was exactly that the Hardware ID's in the INF file did not match those of the actual device. This is most likely the same issue that most SoundMAX drivers have, I downloaded dozens of versions and none actually matched my device.

Though you can probably do this with any version of the driver I use the following one because the Hardware ID's were already a close match and the INF was less bloated.

To get this to install for my hardware I went into smwdmch4.inf and changed one of the Hardware IDs to match mine. You can then verify that it detects a match by going to Update Driver on your non functioning device and seeing whether it prompts that it may not be a match or whether it just goes on and installs it.

This driver is ADI SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio (v 5.12.1.3523) for Intel 82801DB ICH4.

If anyone finds a driver that works without the need to modify the INF file then please post it up.

I just realised something....the ID i gave previously is the Instance ID, the hardware Id stops after 534811D4.

Anyway, having said that, I did some searching around and found a vaguely old version of the driver which has less in it and the hardware ID's are a closer match. I changed the subsys ID on one of the hardware Ids and it seems to work ok.

If this works I may just leave it like this.

Having said that, i have never come across such a driver which is widely regarded as hard to find and troublesome!

I have tried different versions of the driver which mostly did not work and just installed a non function device in my device manager.

I am not sure what motherboard it is, i believe it is Intel 845 series of some description.

The hardware specifically is an NCR RealPOS 30 and I am using the driver specified in the download section on the NCR website

I really don`t know exactly how to modify the INF-File - but I tried.

So give this driver a try - unpack and install via Devicemanager.

Yeah thanks, no Cigar though, stil ldoesnt install from the xp setup but much the same works when done manually.

The whole hardware id is:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_24C5&SUBSYS_534811D4&REV_02\3&13C0B0C5&0&FD

In the INF file the DEV part is 24d5 and the subsys part is entirely different again.

I suspected that after reading some other threads.

I have done that but it doesnt seem to make any difference. As I said, the driver actually installs and works when selecting it manually when 'updating driver'.

Using devcon i can see that the Hardware ID's of the device does not even match what is in the INF file. Which itself is very odd and is most likely the problem.

The specific driver I am using is "Intel Integrated Audio Driver 5.12.1.3713", using the setup.exe that comes with it does not detect the hardware either.

The fact is I have 4 drivers, 3 install and the 4th one doesnt, but once in Windows it works fine.

The driver that doesnt work is some SoundMAX driver (Intel Integrated Audio). Even tried with Devcon and nothing happens!! Just 'devcon failed.'

The $OEM$\$1\Drivers\... structure works.

My NIC, Video and other Chipset drivers all installed.

The only one that failed - and by failed I mean windows starts up and says its an unknown device - is my audio driver (which was last on the OEMPnPDriversPath field).

At this point I am able to point it to my audio driver folder and it works fine and functions correctly.

I added some drivers to my unattended install yesterday and most of them worked... the only one that didnt was my audio driver.

I was able to install the driver manually and it works fine.

Anyone have any tips?

Its not entirely clear what your issue is.

Do you mean when you press F12 on the client it searches for a while but cant find the startrom (cant remember what the error says)? Or simply that the installation starts it cant find drivers of some description?

[Unattended Partition Issues]

Hi All

I have googled this issue and cannot find any solution... yet.

The Scenario:

My hard drive has 1 partition which is about 25% of the total space (formated as NTFS) which I want to deploy Windows too (automatically of course). The other 75% is unallocated at this time.

The Problem:

Depsite playing around with difference settings Windows seems to not want to install to my partition, instead choosing to format the unallocated space and install windows there.

So when Windows boots up i have an E: drive formatted as NTFS with the 75% that 'was' unallocated' and in disk management you can see my other partition which is simly NTFS (Health), no drive letter or anything....

Any ideas?

I just dont get why it would do this.
