  1. Have you updated your graphics card drivers lately?
  2. Why not simply disable them and see what happens? If something breaks, you'll know what they're for and you can simply re-enable them.
  3. Try Directory Lister, it should do exactly what you need it to. - http://freeware.prv.pl/
  4. You may want to be careful with PNG. As the file gets more complex, PNG seems to bloat it to ridiculous sizes. It's not hard to test which type is better. Simply save your graphics using JPEG, GIF and PNG. See which is smaller and looks best.
  5. I have used almost every browser that's been made. I ran a popular freeware site for years and I made sure it worked with almost every browser (even WebTV!). Why do I like IE? It's quite simple. See, I visit HUNDREDS of different websites every week. I've used Mozilla and Opera to do my daily browsing, at it sucked - forms problems, display errors, coding snafus. Mozilla may be standards complaint, but the internet sure isn't. Not to mention the fact that I use programs that ONLY work with IE. IE is also integrated into Windows, which offers even more options (Holy crap does Mozillas bookmarks SUCK). Without IE I would be a very unhappy camper.
  6. That's not the kind of competition I'm talking about. In fact, if people did that it would be called 'unfair business practice'. In order to beat MS, the competition has to start distributing their browsers along with new computers, which isn't going to be easy. To the average consumer, ease of use is far more important than web standards. IE is by far the easiest browser to use, simply because it's part of Windows. Besides, most people couldn't care less what browser they're using, it's the content on the websites they want. IE is capable of displaying that conent just as easily as any other browser. Like I said, MS has more important things to worry about than aesthetics. This is exactly the type of thinking I don't like. "If it doesn't work, throw it away and use something else". If your car didn't work, would you go to england and buy a different one? Of course not, it's not practical. You'd spend a ton of money just to have your steering wheel on the wrong side of the car. It's far easier just to fix the car you have and keep it running. Programs are the same way. In fact, MS has just announced that they are re-constituting the Windows IE team. Why? Because it's better for them to fix IE, rather than try and switch to Mozilla. The main problem with the W3C changing web standards has to do with existing websites. If everyone switched to Mozilla, there would suddenly be a lot of messed up content. Like it or not, MS has already set the internets standards.
  7. Hmm, that's a very strange problem. The only thing I can think of is that one of your system files (or perhaps a registry entry) has been hosed or hijacked. Anyway, you should try installing the uxtheme.dll patch. Personally, I use multipatcher to install it.
  8. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. But when you bash a program that other people use and like, you're asking for an argument. My point is exactly that - people usually use whatever works best. MS doesn't ignore things that are important, they're just a tad slow sometimes. What MS needs is more competition, not more regulation. Which would you find more motivating - someone trying to bully you into doing a better job, or someone trying to do a better job than you? The fact of the matter is, CSS is not that important. MS is currently focusing on security and functionality. Unfortunately, most people have the 'if it doesn't work, use something else' mentality. I preffer to fix the things I use, rather than switching to a whole new system. If I can't fix it, then I'll move on. So far, IE hasn't had any problems I couldn't deal with. Most of Bill Gates' money is tied up in his company. In a business model, if you throw money at one project, you'll end up taking it away from another. Like I said, it's all a matter of priorities with them. Most people aren't tech oriented like us. They browse sites like launch.com, which simply doesn't work with Mozilla. Anyway, I understand your point of view. MS is lazy and IE doesn't do what you want it to. I find it's better to try and help people with problems, than to simply ignore them in favor of less problematic people.
  9. You're missing the point. Just because someone follows the W3C guidelines it does NOT make them more 'right'. TCP/IP and HTTP are protocols and, guess what, not everyone uses them. You need to realize that there were other 'suggestions' that people didn't like. Can you guess why TCP and HTTP became dominant? You're suggesting that what MS is doing with IE is wrong. Gong against someones recommendation is not wrong. MS has far more important things to worry about than making your web site look prettier. The law doesn't set the standards on how fast a car can safely travel, the cars and the drivers do. You're absolutely right, why should people have to pay for anything? Capitalism is teh suq! I have never said anything bad about Mozilla or Opera. MS does indeed update IE. But if they don't rush to keep up with the suggested CSS standards, I'm sure it's simply because they have more important things to deal with. If you like Mozilla (or whatever) and it works for you, by all means, use it. Just remember, programmers will always support the most dominant browser, and that's IE. So guess what the internet will look like when you use Mozilla?
  10. I'm sorry, I'm having a hard time understanding you. Your grammar needs some work, is english a second language for you? Please try to explain that again.
  11. After you resize the taskbar, you have to lock it. Right click taskbar, check 'Lock the Taskbar'. Otherwise it will resize itself.
  12. Just because it's only a year old and not making any noise doesn't mean it's not failing. The fact that you're having problems after you 'fixed' it points to a hardware issue (you can't fix a hardware problem using software). If you want to recover your data, you can try PC Inspector. It's free. After that, I'd recommend booting from a floppy that has FDISK and FORMAT on it. Delete all the partitions and remake them. Run FORMAT with the /U switch (FORMAT /U) and see what happens. If FORMAT runs into any problems, then your drive is failing. You do have a warranty for that drive, right?
  13. I use IrfanView for picture viewing and screen capturing. Ya, it's free.
  14. When your computer starts, hit F8 to display the Safe Mode boot options. Select 'Enable Boot Logging' - This option turns on logging when the computer is started (with any of the Safe Boot options except Last Known Good Configuration). The Boot Logging text is recorded in the ntbtlog.txt file in the %SystemRoot% (windows) folder. The ntbtlog.txt will display all drivers in the order that Windows has loaded them.
  15. I don't like programs that do a large number of tasks. Invariably, they end up lacking something that some other programs have, or they simply don't work right. Besides, I can do most of those tasks using less than 10 programs, and many of those tasks can be done easily just by using Windows. And did I mention that I can do ALL that for free?
  16. What is compliance? Does the W3C dictate what the internet should and shouldn't do? If 90% of us are using Internet Explorer, wouldn't you say that the current web 'standards' aren't 'compliant' with Internet Explorer? Look at it from a legal point of view. Was every law ever written correct? Do you follow the letter of the law exactly? People don't like Internet Explorer mainly because of it's security flaws. I'd like to point out that IE will soon be getting an upgrade that will address many of it's problems. Don't like Internet Explorers lack of functionality? Want some tabbed windows or a built in popup blocker? Try MyIE2, it makes Internet Explorer BETTER than FireFox. And just remember, Mozilla wouldn't be so wonderful if it didn't have a chance to learn from Microsofts mistakes.
  17. The ntbtlog.txt will display the drivers in the order that Windows has loaded them.
  18. Usually Windows assigns your drive letters for you. If you change them after you install windows and before you install any programs, you shouldn't have any problems.
  19. If you have any programs tied to your drive letters, they are going to cry if you change them. You'll have to either reinstall the programs or find a way to change them within the programs themselves. Some people install all their software on to a slave drive (which I really don't recommend). If you've done that, then changing the slave drive letter will totally hose any shortcuts you have to those programs and possibly prevent them from running correctly. Sorry if you didn't know this, I just assumed you did.
  20. No program can make up for a lack of good hardware. Software tweaks can only make your system perform the way it should, not the way you want. Really, the only way to improve gaming performance is with a hardware upgrade. And even upgrading your graphics cards will only help so much. You eventually have to buy a whole new computer, otherwise you're stuck playing 3 year old games.
  21. You could try something like Webcoder. It's an HTML editor that wont do anything you don't tell it to. It's fairly easy to learn and it sure beats using Notepad.
  22. Go to the Control Canel > Administrative Tools. Run the Computer Management app. Under Storage, you will see Disk Management. Right click on any drive and select 'Change Drive Letter and Paths'. You can reassign your drives any letter you like (except your boot drive, that can't be changed). Note - You must have the Logical Disk Manager services running to do this.
  23. Random problems are teh suq. Unfortunately, it's a sign of hardware instability. I had a similar problem once and ended up having to ditch my motherboard. Everything was fine after I put the new one in. Maybe you should do some memory testing and update your BIOS? Just a thought. Best o' luck to ya.
  24. If you have Opera set as your default browser, it can cause problems like that. Go to your browser options and make sure Opera isn't set as the default. Then go to your Internet Explorer options and make sure it's set as the default browser. Also, you may want to reinstall quicktime for Internet Explorer. Hopefully, that will fix it.
  25. If you want prevent explorer from going crazy when you view avi files, use this registry fix (just paste this into notepad and save as a whatever.REG file, then run it). Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [-HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shellex\PropertyHandler\{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}] As for explorer crashing, there's no way to nail that one down without more information. Does it happen after a certain amount of time, or when using certain programs or what? What was the error message before? Are you having any other problems? You can try this 'fix', but it may not work - Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced] "SeparateProcess"=dword:00000001 [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "DesktopProcess"=dword:00000001 Best o' luck to ya.
