  1. I just received the updated the service pack 2 yesterday. I'm not sure if that has anything to do with this or not.... Everything was working fine, until this morning. All of a sudden my whole system locked up. I restarted it and it goes to a black screen with an option of hitting F1 to re-boot or F2 to enter setup. F1, does nothing but flash the same message, when struck. F2 goes into the set up screen. I tried to hit F8 while restarting, to get to safe mode, but it wont let me. I also tried to boot up with the WinXp disk and I can't do that either. My whole life is on that computer and I need to be able to at least get on and copy some files to a networked computer. (I am currently on my lap top) Please help if you can.
  2. I'vr never had to do anythin like that before and really have no clue where to start. Is there any place that might give me step by step instructions? Thanks
  3. Ok, my mom had an old computer that she had 98 on. She tried to upgrade to Win XP and it just put WinXp on in adition to 98. I tried to reinstall WinXp and now it has 2 copies of Win Xp and win 98. It never gave me an option to upgrade or overwrite the old ones. My question is this: is there any way to completely delete everything and just put Win XP back on? We don't need anything from that computer any more. I just want one operating system on it.
  4. My mom installed XP on her computer, but at some point durning the install she must have opted to keep her old OS on there as well. When she boots up, she has the choice to pick an OS. Win 98 or XP. She does not want 98 on her computer (thus the new os) and I'm sure it's eating up unneeded space. I'm not sure how to get 98 off while keeping the new XP intact. Can anyone help?
  5. Thanks a ton. I must have looked right over it. Sometimes I am a fool. And when I say sometimes, I mean most of the time.
  6. I just got a new computer and for some reason all of the attachments that come in, get removed from Outlook Express. I looked all over for a setting for this and I can find anything. Anyone know how to change this?
  7. Before I got Win XP, I had a handy little developers tool I used when I was a designer. It added a "Images List" to my menu when I right clicked on a webpage. When selected, it would show me a list of images used to make that page, their file sizes as well as the total page file size and aprox. time it took the page to load at various connection speeds. I used it all the time. Now ever since I got XP, the page just come up blank when I try to get the image list. Anyone know how to make this work again? I tried downloading the tool again and I get the same thing.
  8. I have the home version of XP (and a cable modem) and I have tried unsuccessfully 3 times to set up my computer wireless in my home, so I don't have to run wires all over. I tried 3 different Brands and each get the same result. It seems to work fine for about 20 minutes. Connects fine with super fast speed. Then blamo......I can't connect to my Outlook or the Internet. Strangely enough I can still send and receive messages via ICQ and AIM. But that's it. The connection to the internet never comes back. I assumed it was some sort of problem with XP, but I have called tech support 3 times and none of those fools know how to fix it or what to do. I really need to get the wireless set up, so if someone could help, I'd really appreciate it. Any brand names or fixes would help out a lot. Thanx in advance
  9. My nephew totally messed up his computer downloading god knows what off the internet. When I saw it he said that he had been doing things in Safe mode for months. When he re-boots, it goes right into safe mode with window after window of errors. I want to re-install ME on his system, but I don't want anything left from 98. How do I go about removing the OS totally from the computer? Then, once that is done, do I just reboot with the new install disc in the drive? Please help. Thanx.
  10. SUCCESS!!!!! I can't believe thats all it was... I have been searching for this answer for months now That fixed all 3 problems. I am for ever greatfull! If you ever need anything (anything I might be able to provide) don't hesitate to ask! RedBrain redbrain@redbrain.com
  11. Yeah, I really cant afford to back up 3 years worth of work to reformate everything. (Nor do I have the time.) That didn't work either. Anyone else have any ideas. I have only heard this happening to a few other people and they did not know how to fix it either.
  12. No, that's not it. Everything worked fine for like the fist month I had it. Then after one windows update, I was unable to do the things I mentioned. Another thing I noticed is that when I click on a zip file, it automatically starts to download them (open at current location) . I don't have the option any more. To save them, I must "Save target as", which is fine unless there is some sort of button that I can not right click on.
  13. Ever since I got WinXP and IE6, I am unable to do cretain functions that are imparative to my business. I am unable to: 1) View the source of webpages. (nothing shows up at all) 2) Hit the "Edit with Program" button. (button is greyed out) 3) When I try to save images from any website, my only option is to save them as .bmp files. 4) When I use some developers tools (Such as Image List) I just get a blank page. I have tried to re-download IE5 and it wont let me. It says I have a newer versions and aborts the install. Since WinXP uses IE6 for some functionality, I am unable to uninstall it totally. I have downloaded all the patches and fixes and nothing is working! I do webdesign, marketing and advertising and I need to be able to do these things I can't do anymore. Can ANYONE please help?
