Computer is a Gateway Essential 667 that originaly had 98SE. Still want to get a few more years use out of it, so boughtt an XP Upgrade that had never been used for $65.
Installation of XP went fine.
Replaced the Intel 82801 AC'97 Audio Controller that XP loaded with the original Conexant Crystal WDM Controller. Analog sound works fine.
Had been using Boston BA735 USB Speakers with the 98SE install and would like to use them with the XP. Installed the Boston software whichis supposed to pull a digital signal off the sound card, but have not been able to get the speakers to work.
Has anyone been able to do this?
Plenty of posts about using the regular BA735 speakers. They just require a digital output.

noguru,
First I heard about. Reason I copied ojn's post here. Have been lucky so far (cross fingers), so don't visit Malware very often unless I suggest someone go there.

This was posted by ojn at TechGuy's 31July2009 at 04:38PM on thread about free AV's that still were supported for the old systems. I checked it out. It is real.
Avast has added the following notice without much announcement.
See: http://www.avast.com/eng/system-requirements-avast-home.html
"Note: The operating systems Windows 95/98/Me/NT4 will be supported until
the end of 2009."

This may have been asked before but could find nothing by searching. Wolud the Autopatcher work on a Mellineum Edition install? I have to reinstall my ME and Autopatcher (used April 2008) did such a good job on my wife's 98SE, i would really like to use it.

Thanks for correcting me. Was repeating info that I had read on another forum, can't remember which, about Vista rtail discs being tied to license key so would not work with OEM. Hopefully he can get one with SP1 and bypass 72 Updates.

Her OEM key WILL Not work with retail version disc.
Depending upon version, Visat w/SP1 will cost $240 - $300.
Make back ups of all her personal files, then use the OEM discs.
Just spent about 15 hours redoing my computer because the HD failed and I had no back ups. Got a new, bigger HD, External HD and Acronis.
Compared to the 3 hours for reinstalling all the needed updates (comp is 22 months old), 52 just to get to SP1, manually removing unnecessary programs is a breeze.

You may want to try speedguide.net.

Only other thing I can add is go into LAN settings and click Automatically detect settings. Have 2 Gateways one running 98SE and the other ME. I use US Robotics USB adaptors for them now, but did have the 98SE hooked up to my DSL gateway and that is all I needed.
Not that familiar with D-Links, but some older ones had a USB port, you probably could have connected to the 98SE that way. Ethernet connections work much better.

I hate to be the bearer of sad news.
You need to mark Avira Antivir Personal v. 7.06.00268 LAST for 98SE.
The new version Avira Antivir v. 8.1.0.331 released August, 2008, has only 2000/XP/Vista as OS's

I have used Speedguides optimizer on all my computers. 1 Vista, 1 ME, and 1 98SE all unmodified except for optimizer changes. My modem says trained at 1536/1024 Kbps. I routinely get readings from Speedtest.net of 1305-1440 Kbps down and 730-850 Kbps up on all macHines depending on test site.. PC Pitstop once gave 1640/975.
Nitro UCSC Test on Vista done about 10 minutes ago. For some reason always 100 Kbps lower than Speedtest.net. Until I used Speedguides optimizer download was about 900, up was about 650, and the reciever limited value was over 25%.

Thanks to whomever posted this solution. I sure I saw it here, but couldn't find the post again to give you credit.
Equipment
Gateway Essential 667 Windows 98SE using USRobotics 805422 USB Wireless Adaptor
Actiontec GT-701WG hooked by Ethernet to
Compaq SR2180NX Vista Home Premium SP1 with shared HP PSC 1410v (61.53.25.9)
Printer name on Compaq1 is "HP PSC 1400 series". HP choice, you may be able to change it.
Networked Vista and XP machines can use the shared printer.
Basic Problem
In Network Neighborhodd the 98SE can see the Public Folder, but not the Printer on the Compaq.
side note:I have not been able open the folder yet. Gave up after waiting about 1 1/2 hours for it to open.
Using information picked up from MSFN Forums, this is how I got the 98SE to print to the shared HP PSC.
Turn off the Vista computer and disconnect the printer. The printer MUST BE CONNECTED to the 98SE for the last part
of the printer installation or it will fail.
Install the HP PSC1410v on the 98SE.
While the printer is stilled connected to the 98SE, left click Start, Settings, Printers, right click on HP PSC 1400 and left
click Properties. Click the "Details" tab.
"Print to followig port" selection will need to be changed. Click Add Port. In the popup, check Network. In the box under 'Specify the network path to the printer' type the path to the printer.. In this case it was" \\Compag1\HP PSC 1400series". Then click OK.
Do not change "Print to the following driver".
Click "Spool Settings" tab. see that "Spool print jobs so program finishes faster" and "Start printing when 1st page is
spooled" are selected. Set "Spool data format" to RAW, if not already. (If NFT is selected, the printer locks up.) Click OK, Click OK and close the Printers Folder.
Do Not Share the printer.
Turn off the 98SE and disconnect the printer. Hook the printer back up to the Vista and turn both on.
Turn the 98SE on and print something.
The printer will not show up in Device Manager, but will appear in System Information under Printer.
The rest of this is just the Network and Sharing settings and Printer settings for both machines.

Old (1999-2000) Gateway Essential 667, Windows 98SE 4.10.2222 Intel Pentium III 667MHz, MB Intel 667 PIII (Bryant) R2
I am doing a little cheap (I hope) upgrading of this computer. I am using it now because my Compag SR2180NX/Vista is still waiting (4 weeks) for a replacement on/off switch.
It now has 512 RAM, a new power supply, and Samsung DVDRW drive. Will probably put in new HDD later.
I am thinking about replacing the CPU on this computer with a faster one, but I am not sure what would be a good match for the motherboard. Would any Pentium III 900+MHz with FC-PGA package, 133Mhz BUS Frequency and 1.7v. work? What other parameters would need to match? Help!!

Thanks for your suggestions.
The problem is solved for now. Still not sure what caused it.
Have been working with some people over at MS Communities on this and wanted to print out instructions from a couple of posts. I reinstalled the printer that I had uninstalled. Printer worked right, but was eliminating possible sources of tcpmib.dll cal. On reboot the error message was gone. Shut down and rebooted 10 times to check.
The printer is a HP PSC 1410v.
Again thanks for help, DLsayre

I have a problem after using AutoPatch98. At log on screen I get the error message "error cannot find TcpMib.dll". The MS KB solution is to remove TcpMUI.dll, TcpMon.dll, TcpMib.dll and another one that I cannot remember. There was no TcpMib.dll file. Basic 98SE doesn't use it. Kept the HPTcp*.dll printer files because they were on 4-5 days before this started. Of course, it didn't work..
Have been working at MS 98SE Community on this. Did suggested search for files containing TcpMib.dll to see what was calling for the file and found the following:
System.dat, User.dat, HPTcpMib.dll, HPTcpMon.dll, HPTcpMui.dll
Uninstalled the printer.
A selective startup with Config.sys, Autoexec.bat, System.ini, Win.ini and Startup Group unchecked still gives the the no TcpMib.dll error.
Could one of the installs from AutoPatch98 be causing this?
Working on my daughter's GW Essential667(y2000); PentiumIIIE, 667MHz; MB Intel Willow Springs 2 WL810E; running 98SE Ver. 4.10.2222A; IE 6.0 SP1. Have installed new power supply and DVD Burner and hooked up my HP PSC 1410v.
Started with clean reinstall and was updating components slowly. Using IE 5 and Update v3. Loaded IE 6.0 and updates for it. Next day when I went into Update asked if wanted to go to Update v4. Clicked ok and got screen that said I had to be an Administrator to use Update. Tried all fixes at MS and am still locked out. Update Support no help because 98SE. So until I find a cure I am locked out of Windows Update.

Boston BA735 USB Speakers With XP
in Windows XP
Posted
cdod,
Thanks for the reply. was just coming in to report that I have the speakers working.
Found the 01/02/2010 post from premorob at "sevenforums" explaining how he did it with a WIN7 system using the 2K drivers from the Gateway 7507807.exe download. For some reason my computer wiil not extract those files. "These files are not compatible with your system".
However, I still have the install disc from Boston and on a hunch I checked it. There is a folder labeled WIN2000. Note says theses are the drivers needed for 2K and we are including them even though 2K has not been released yet I can almost forgive Boston for deleting the 735 USB files.
Anyway, hooked the speakers up and let XP install them. They were installed as a HID. Apparently XP does have some Boston HID drivers, but they don't work with the 735 USBs.
Went into Device Manager, HID, Boston HID and updated the driver to the 2K BAUSBHID.inf.
Soud is great. Just wish I could get the rest of the interface to work. Don't really need the GUI, but it would be nice to be able to change the voulme with the knob on the speaker.
