The problem is solved and SP1 RC build 17128 is running OK. I had a look at the CBS.log but that was not quite easy to analyse. Incidentally I found a post in a Microsoft TechNet Blog stating that DELL system software and anti virus software solved the installation problem. So I uninstalled McAfee Security Center (not only deactivated the components as before) and I uninstalled DELL Quick Set. Now the SP1 RC could be installed. I have no idea if one or both were causing the trouble, but I don't have the delight to take the time and analyze that in detail ;-) I never imagined that Microsoft really means what they say: no anti virus and firewall software. IIRC I never had to uninstall such stuff installing XP SP1 or SP2. Probably the most common products should be handled by the update correctly, but I can't imagine that this can be done in the remaining weeks until release. Many Greetings MichaelZ
