  1. I'm installing DirectX 9.0b during the svcpack.inf portion of the Win XP install and have run into a problem with the Windows Critical Update KB839643 (DirectX 9.0 Security Update). I receive the error:

"Setup cannot continue because one or more pre-requisites required to install KB839643 failed. For More details check the Log File C:\WINDOWS\KB839643.log"

    The log file reads:

    [KB839643.log]

    0.078: ================================================================================

    0.078: 2004/07/14 10:56:29.910 (local)

    0.078: c:\879a5a52ab06d5f7e22ec66877046ec4\sp2\update\update.exe (version 5.4.15.0)

0.078: Service Pack started with following command line:

0.110: SOFTWARE\Microsoft\DirectX\Version is Not Equal To Specified Value

0.110: Condition Check for Line 1 of PreRequisite returned FALSE

    0.125: ReadStringFromInf: SetupGetLineText failed: 0xe0000102

0.125: KB839643 Setup encountered an error: Setup cannot continue because one or more pre-requisites required to install KB839643 failed. For More details check the Log File C:\WINDOWS\KB839643.log

I'm installing the patch in the RunOnce portion of the install along with other hotfixes that won't process in the svcpack.inf portion. Attempts to install the update via Windows Update gives me a "Failed to update and must close Windows Update" error window, which details lead me to believe that I have the incorrect version of "update.exe" or something?

Anyone else run into this problem? Any ideas for a fix? Any help would be appreciated.

  2. Was having the same problem and discovered that the issue was somehow??? related to my video drivers. I was also using a modified boot screen. Worked fine after I removed the boot screen. I also discovered that by booting from an un-modified WinXP CD and starting the Recovery Console, I could rebuild the bootcfg to match the original boot.ini and that also allowed the system to boot normally.

    In the Recovery Console enter:

    bootcfg /rebuild

    enter: Microsoft Windows XP Professional

    enter the option: /fastdetect

    enter: exit

    reboot choosing boot normally

    Hope this helps.
