You must stick with Firefox 2, Opera, SeaMonkey 1.1x (not SeaMonkey 2 alfa because it required KernelEx) or some other browsers.
I am a little confused, I thought sea monkey would continue to support old operating system, this is what I read in the moz forums. They even said the would not use the new Gecko 1.9 engine. Did they do a turn about as well?

Our 98 is being ignored...
That is one thing I hate about computers and computer operating system the becomes outdated too soon.
Some people will disagree with me. I think 98se is the most stable system. Even If I did have xp or Vista. Software is getting to big. I looked at avg free 8. It is 75 Mb that is pretty huge for a person on dial up. Yes, I am still on dial-up. I am really surprised with Seamonkey how much space is required for a mac. I liked it when software was easy to install and not to big.
If you use some of AXCEL216 tips, Grc tips and use outpost firewall freeware version and avg 7, you can have a pretty secure system for windows 98se. I have avast ready to install, should avg quit supporting windows 98se. The only thing I will miss is the avg dos boot up scanner. I would not use all of Axecl216 tip, some are gone and some will crash you system. Firefox 2.0.0.20 is not a memory hog.

With my tweaks, I will still be able to use paypal with firefox 2.0.0.20
I got the EV extension for firefox and useragent switcher. This will allow me to fool websites into thinking I am running xp with firefox 3.0.5 or IE 7 on Vista.
Seems like K-Meleon and Opera will still support old systems.
By the way, I am still having problems getting shockwave 11 to install correctly using kernelex.
It gives me a dll error about the Kernel32.
There must be something I forgot to do with kernelex after I installed. Yes, I did edit that .ini file.

I read there was a patch that allowed Firefox 3 to run on Windows 98se/ME but the super moderator closed it and removed the links? Why?
No offense to the Moderator. Why is the patch not allowed? Isn't the gecko engine Firefox uses considered open source and you are free to modify the engine or source?
If the patch just modifies the gecko engine, than it perfect legal to have the patch. Otherwise you could not have other stuff based of the gecko engine.

They're not going to. But they do use the same rendering engine, and that's what has become incompatible with Win9x.
They could use the old rendering engine. They do not need to go with Firefox.
To the other Poster
Cairo has or had an earlier version is used in other browsers that does work on Windows 98se. At least that what I read somewhere on the Firefox forums.
I just hope other browsers do not upgrade to the new rendering engine.

FF 3.0 beta requires at least Win2000 to run.
Soon the next generation of SeaMonkey (2.0) will be in beta and will require a minimum of Win2k.
I thought SeaMonkey was not going to follow in Firefox footsteps?

Well, I tried it...
But I couldn't get far. Windows 98 SE did see my SATA drive with no problem, and I got W98 installed. Then it was time for a reboot, and that's when things went down hill.
Once I got the W98 splash page, the loading of the OS slowed to a crawl. The cycle bar towards the bottom went really, really slow and it got stuck on this screen for almost 10 minutes before I gave up on it. I'm figuring that W98 saw my dual core AMD processor and 2 gig of memory and wasn't sure what to make of it. That and the chipset on the board. So I couldn't get far enough to install the NForce driver that I found. I was hoping it would work, because I have a few games that just don't work right under XP. I guess I can try Virtual PC, although I expect the emulation for gaming won't be so good. I don't play those old games much anymore, so it's alright. It would've been neat to have W98 to play around with though for some of that old software.
Like the other poster said. Try limiting your memory to 1 gb or under.

Choose safe command prompt only
C:\windows\command\edit c:\windows\system.ini
Then add the setting above.
Note, you may need to do this again, if you are in the middle of setting up windows 98se.

K-Meleon is also based on Gecko. It'll stop working just the same with Gecko 1.9 on Win9x.
If remains previous version of Gecko 1.9 between downloads could be great.
On their little forum there is a certain number of people using win9x.
Or you could still use Firefox 2.0.0.?

Clearly I remeber impact that windows 98 left on community. I was greatly inspired by 98lite that was replacing win98 shell with windows 95 and my effortless try to do so with win XP, still wondering is it possible!? At the time i was stuck with aston shell XP icon theme and was very happy about it. Anyways if you try using QEUMU it will be painfull expirience without KQEMU or QEMU Accelerator. And by the way is running windows on WM breaking EULA ?!)
98lite, 2000 & xp
The newer version are more limited than the 98 version unless you buy the program.
98 also has a pro version. The 98 version also works with windows me.

Nvidia has stoped support for Windows 98SE with nvidia 3 chipset, because of that nForce 430 is not supporting this OS

I have update drivers available for my modem, I never update them. It disables a function that I like on it.

I did a quick review of 3.0a7 code and was shocked with Gecko developers' laziness:
In fact, nothing prevented them to make absolutely 98 compatible version: they even have own GetGlyphIndices wrapper, there still a hell lot 98-compatibility code, and SetWorldTransform() is used only for scaling.
It does not seems hard to make 9x-friendly version, i think it is harder to understand their creepy build system
Tihiy, they simply don't want to make Win9x compatible version because users base of those systems is relatively small.
But for me as the user of Firefox it's more interesting that such talented programmer like you thinks it could possible (not only theoretically but also practically).
I just read 58% still use 98se. Of course not all use Firefox.
One thing, I wish people would not use is User Agent Switcher unless absolutely necessary.

On a old system. Which would be a better bet use an insecure Firefox2 or an insecure IE?
I would go with a insecure Firefox.
Technically all browsers are not secure and neither is any operating system. No mater how many updates or patches are installed.

Just to correct some people, Some AMD motherboards do support windows 98se.
I had on old emachine that had windows xp (no service packs) on it.
The restore cd had most of the drivers for the system for windows 98se. The modem was the hard part.
The pain was changing the system to a fat 32. Installing windows 98se and then installing windows xp. I had to cheat install windows xp using the I386 folder. That would take me awhile to explain. They way I did it was legal.

Do all Vista editions Require Activation and Wga? I was wanting to know what Microsoft plans to do for mission critical systems. There are systems that have to run 24 hours a day and are not connected to the internet.
I read volume license customers even have to activate every 6 months. This is also bad for small businesses that do not use the internet.

Firefox 3.0.5 is looking in the registry to see what you have. You can fool the install in additon to kernelex by editing the registry to change in from windows 98 to windows xp/vista. There are two keys to change. Just remember after you install Firefox or xp programs, change it back. Then you may have to use the override to run it. Sorry, I can not find the key information at this time. I should of saved it.
