Just an update to let you know where i'm at. I have managed to set up the network about 99% but still have one more problem. I can access vista from any other computer and write files across the network to it. I can access other computers from the vista box and can, for instance play a video across the network. However if i try to copy a file from any other computer to the vista box i get told i don't have permission to do so. Eh? So i, as a user or admin, cannot write to my own drive even though all permissions are set so, but another computer is allowed access! I am going round in circles looking at networking properties and permissions boxes but i will get there in the end. Back on topic, i found Vlite as easy to use as i did nlite before it and was delighted to be able to strip, i think, over half of the bloat away. I am running at just over 5Gb with my web browser, email, 2 media players, antivirus and a few other small programs installed. Not a patch on what is possible, i know, but just what i am looking for, an os without the bloat. Looking forward to the next release so i can try again:). Hiro

Yes, my computer network browser worked fine, i could browse through all the shared drives on all the computers in the network and see what was on them but when i tried to copy it to the vista box i got the no permission warning and i was logged on as root at the time. I made another Vlited vista and installed that with the firewall and internet sharing left on and i have been able to enable network discovery, file sharing, public folder sharing and disable password protected sharing (which i couldn't before) but still cannot share a drive on the vista box or copy from any other computer on the metwork. However i now have a shared public folder so at least i can dump stuff on there from another computer. I suspect the problem has nothing to do with Vlite and i just need to get my head around the way vista networking works. The game i installed before the failed reboot was GT Legends, and i also installed Frapps and VLC media player at the same time. Not sure if one of these caused the problem or if it was just a coincidence. I ended up booting to my xp disc, entering recovery console and typed "fixmbr", then after a reboot the vista boot loader had the "earlier version of windows" choice back so i quickly booted to it and all was fine. Thanks for that nuhi, i will try again. Just one potentially intereting point though, you mention the firewall being needed for the "computer browser" , i can certainly browse other computers graphically through the nework connections page, i just can't actually drag files from the other computers onto mine or share a drive on it. Does this sound right? You mention "adding a compatability option for that", does that mean at sometime we will be able to remove both these things or will that not be possible? Many thanks, Hiro. PS Got even bigger problems at the moment, installed a game on the system and tthen it wouldn't reboot even in safe mode. Tried the rescue system from the dvd now it still won't boot and nor will the xp that is on there either. Don't you just love windoze? Just off too google how to disable the boot loader in the hope that i can get me xp back at least then try vlite again. Wish me luck!

Just installed my first try at a vlited vista and everything seems to work just as i wanted apart from file sharing. I can get on my network and browse other computers but when i try to copy files i am told i am not allowed. I decided to share a drive on the vista computer and send the files there from the xp box instead but when i tried to share a drive on the vista box i am told "The specified service does not exist as an installed service". Seems to be i goofed and removed one thing too many from my vista, does anyone know what i need to NOT remove on the next attempt? Just in case you need to know, i have removed IE but am able to access the internet with Firefox (through my router) and the windows firewall/security center are not installed. I have been using nlite for sometime and think it is a brilliant package so have decided to give vlite a go. I have been reading the forum in preparation and only have one question concerning usb pens/sticks. It seems that most usb devices (pda's, digital camera's etc) need to have media player installed to work, is this also the case for usb sticks? I most definitely do not want media player installed but would like to use a usb stick, so is there any way i can do this? BTW in an attempt to research this i searched the forum for "usb" and got no replies! That seems a bit strange doesn't it? Hope someone can help me, Hiro. PS. The device i intend to use is as a simple usb stick not an mp3 player or anything like that, just a simple 2Gb storage stick.
