For some reason services.msc couldn't edit the registry to enable the service. When I enabled it manually (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\lanmanserver, changed start value from 4 to 2) it starts automatically. The same problem occured when I tried to add IE back to the desktop which was removed by nlite. It seems some system components cannot edit the registry. The thing is, I have done two completely separate nlite CDs and installed them on separate computers, but they both have exactly the same problem - I can't enable services and IE won't display on the desktop unless I do it manually. I used nlite 1.2.1.
Thanks for your help.

I have used nLite to create a modified windows install CD, but accidentally disabled the server service which I now need to use. I can start the service and it works fine, but when I set the service to automatic startup and restart the computer the service is always disabled again. How can I keep the service enabled?
Thanks

Disabled service
in nLite

Ok, I properly understand it now. In HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce nlite puts 3 commands, which anybody who uses nlite may have seen popping up the first time they log on. I had no idea what they were until now.
One of these commands uses c:/windows/inf/nlite.inf to change various settings that are specified when using nlite to create an installation CD.
This file has a line that sets the lanmanserver startup registry value to 4.
As this is in the default user runonce, it ran every time I created and logged on to a new user, disabling the service.
I've just changed the value 4 to 2 in the inf and left it as it is.
Hope this helps anyone else who may have this problem.
