Turns out that I had the RAM installed in the wrong order. The Asus book's diagram was kinda ambigious about how to put the cards in. On my mobo I have 4 slots - a1 (yellow), b1 (brown), a2(yellow), b2(brown). I got everything to finally work once I put them in the A1/A2 slots, FYI. Good luck to anyone else stumbling upon this thread!

New ASUS mobo, sata drives, and then XP just dies around the "30 Minutes Left" mark. (though i did get as far as 19 minutes on one attempt) Thanks, Craig
