  1. Go with an opty, the few extra bucks are well worth it. I put one in my shuttle mce box and it's working out great. It runs very cool, cooler than a regular athlon and if you really want to make it quiet you can undervolt it. I'm not at home so I can't see what it's running at but I'm running mine undervolted at standard clock speeds and I couldn't ask for a more reliable machine. I've got the 165 but spending a couple extra bucks for more speed wouldn't hurt either.
  2. Sorry, I thought I deleted this topic just after posting it. I realized I hadn't enabled file and print through the firewalls of the other machines. Stupid mistake.
  3. Xp is licensed for up to 10 concurrent connections if memory serves me right. If you're not going to exceed that, by all means, install xp.
  4. To ease driver compatibility I'd try to run it with an os equal to or newer than what you plan to use as your client os.
  5. I did a fresh vista x32 install on my shuttle this weekend but have an odd networking issue now. I can ping my router and get to the internet but I can't ping any machines inside my network, other than the router anyway. Other machines can ping the shuttle and access its shares but not the other way around. The network location is set to private and I disabled the firewall, still no good. The network is flat, no vlans or anything funky like that going on. Any ideas?
  6. Without even a second beta yet August 14 seems rather optimistic.
  7. I just had occasion to use this for the first time. Works great, thanks!!
  8. Shhhhhhhhh, I got my *content edited* for saying basically that.
  9. I haven't tested this myself, I just saw it for download and thought I better hold onto it in case I need it someday. I don't think it's warez but should it turn out to be please delete this. Download link: http://rapidshare.com/files/46569736/NTUSB.rar.html
  10. I've got a few NT servers still cranking away. I think they are slated to get replaced next year though. As far as usb, drivers to exist to now for usb on NT. Would I be breaking any forum rules to post them?
  11. heh, I had a similar issue with finding them for my hp. Had I known that I could have checked a foreign site. Instead I found another model with the same controller that was sold with xp. EDIT: just for fun I gave it a shot, no such luck in Europe either. http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwar...181〈=en
  12. It was ok but I should have waited for dvd.
  13. I did the same with my hp 6275. I had an option in my bios to disable native sata mode which let me install xp, then I installed the drivers after it was loaded then turned native mode back on. Eventually I did slipstream the drivers anyway. Just letting you know you might have other options to get it up and running asap.
  14. Even though I don't know what it is, pretty much any working laptop made in the last few years is worth at least close to $100.
  15. Forgive my ignorance but I thought vista was supposed to perform well with this sort of thing without having to run sysprep at all. For instance I ghosted a vmware machine and restored the ghost to a physical machine with no problems at all. The first boot took a long time to complete while installing new drivers but other than that I there was no evidence that vista wasn't installed on the machine from the original dvd.
  16. Not to be a smartass but the 8600 isn't a good choice for anyone. It's much too underpowered for anything dx10 so if one needs dx10 an 8800 is really the only option. If one doesn't need dx10 a nice 7 series card would be the best choice.
  17. With your system being three years old I'm assuming you need an agp card. This 7600 GS is a good card for that price range, and passively cooled for silent opperation. I think you can get an nvidia 8600 for somewhere close to that range but don't be fooled; they are worthless. The only advantage they have over the 7 series is dx10 and they are too underpowered to play any dx10 games. The 7600s are faster in every other way. Also, if you could up that to $140 this 7600 GT would be a worthwhile upgrade.
  18. This might do the trick. I read about it a couple weeks ago but haven't had the opportunity to test it yet so I have no idea how well it works.
  19. I use truecrypt on a number of machines and external drives and love it. It's free and it's secure and it's easy to use.
  20. Hi guys, I've been lurking here for a while and posting for about two weeks. I think I've settled in to become a fixture here. I've been a network admin for 8 years. I'm a gamer and have a side photography business, although the business mainly exists to justify all the money I spend on photo equipment. I've got a gaming an xp rig, a shuttle vista htpc, a laptop, an ipcop router on a gx110 and numerous other junk lying around including a couple proliants I'm trying to find a use for. I was cleaning out my basement and found a 133 mhz laptop I'm installing xp on as I type this just for fun. I'm not quite sure what I'm going to do with it yet, maybe a dedicated nes emulator but I just didn't want to toss a working laptop. Anyway, that's me. Glad to be here and thanks for all the help you all contribute.
