  1. RJARRRPCGP... Have this funny feeling that the newer Operating Systems , with all other things remaining the same , produce a higher baud rate ...illogical as it may seem. I could never get higher than 28.8 Kbps with 9x..the only other thing that can't be ruled out is that the Local Telephone Company has eased the congestion in the lines in preparation for World Cup Cricket. Do you mind taking a 'stab' at the Silence of the Modem
  2. Hello Jaclaz ! In answer to quests made in the posts I'd like to make the following observations: Quote :As to your URL issue, that seems very odd - have you installed IE6 SP1? My IE is 5.0......and not only is the disappearance of the URLs odd but I experience the disappearance of my password to the ISP on reboot even though the SAVE PASSWORD box is checked. I have decided to live along with same by keeping the box unchecked. A point that slipped me is that a music CD also gives no sound...you can see the minutes counting down but no sound. Relative to the quest :"does the PC speaker (the internal one) beep at all?" The only speaker on the mobo is a standard Piezo electric one on the Motherboard and clearly works as the Single Beep at POST is audible. Like I said , the modem connects at a better baud rate than it did under Win 95..the problem is that you sit and wait and sometimes only to realize that it did not initialize. I just ran PING through DOS...got the results.. But No Sound. My limited knowledge of the AT commands precludes me from delving into "(it could be that you have an ATM0 in your string?)" I went into the Bios Settings..they remained actually as they were on 30.5.06 under Win 95 [ Win 2000 was installed Jan 07]. Changes seen in Peripheral Configuration are : Serial Port which was [Auto] is now ENABLED ; Parallel Port which was [Auto] is now ENABLED. AUDIO was and is ENABLED. Finally....the transition from 95 to 2000 was not very smooth....it was Plug and Pray. From the outset the modem showed a Yellow question mark in the Device manager and I had to change its IRQ to remove the conflict. Sorry for the trouble Guys ....I am an ole fart that is self taught.
  4. I recently dumped Windows 95 OSR2 after it went into DOS and refused return to windows or allowing the files to be opened even though seen. An attempt to use the recovery CD for a clean reinstall failed. I dumped the ole girl and installed Win 2000 Pro. Quite an exciting OS after years with Win 95..I sorta like it ..but a couple of things just don't jel. My modem even though more efficient.....had 21.6 Kbps with win 95 ..now receive 52 Kpbs...is SILENT during dial-up and so I can't tell that the modem is connecting and receiving 'handshake' until a little pop-up says connected. Is this a normal feature of Win 2000 Pro or is there something I need or can do to activate this feature. The other nuisance that I encounter is that the URLs in the Address drop-down list are not seen on reboot. The only URL seen is the Home Page..Google. I have tried everything in my limited knowledge but to no avail. Thanks for any advice. System : Sony PCV 150 Hard Drive 4 gigs Ram 64 megs Modem uses Motherboard Piezo electric speaker Speaker volume on monitor set at 61% Modem Properties show that sound is set at the 3rd indicator to the right [there are 4 indicators] Device Manager shows no yellow impediments. AV ..free Avast Antispyware......Spybot
