  1. No. Not being that versed in those settings, I have avoided them. What does that do? Thanks doon
  2. I'm trying to slipstream about 70-80 updates into my XP PRO SP2 student version. I then burn the iso file onto a cd-rw disk and install onto my 'practice' drive; "D". Once complete, along with a couple of minor 'bugs' that I think I can clean up by re-doing the process, I get a problem I cannot seem to solve. I get the message, regarding Windows File Protection (WFP) saying " .... replaced by unrecognized versions ..."; and it asks for the SP2 disk. I have a SP2 disk but the process will not accept it. While I click on "Cancel", it only for that boot time works. Next time booted, same thing occurs. I've googled this problem and come across a lot of hits ... but no definitive corrective means. Has anyone experienced this before? It's obvious that one of the installed update files is the cause of the problem ... because ... without the slipstream, the original installation works fine; and have also in the past, installed the plethora of updates via Microsoft Update process. But I'd sure like to have a working slipstreamed version due to my practice of every now and then cleaning off the hard drive and reinstalling. Thanks doon
  3. By no means was my comment meant to be a put-down of nLite. I think it's very good; and I, for one, REALLY appreciate the time and effort you've put into it. I could NEVER accomplish what you've done. It would be a horrible job, as you touched on, to have to address all the settings and tweaks; I agree. But being a novice, my experience these past couple of days in trying to create a usable slipstreamed XP PRO SP2 disk has, in a short comment, 'been a nightmare'. Luckily I am using CD-RW disks; if not, would have gone thru at least 12-15. My goal has been directed toward trying to clean up the unnecessary stuff; such as foreign keyboards, foreign lanquage, things that the dialogue indicated would be OK to eliminate ... etc ... etc. But not matter, so far I've been totally unsuccessful to create a usuable disk that goes all thru the installation process without a difficulty or hang up. So while not addressing ALL the tweaks, etc., a broad guide in this area would be of great benefit to novices like me. Just a suggestion. doon
  4. OK. Now I get it. Thanks to you ... and also to Mandarin. But the other poster's comment makes no sense. Thank you, both of you, for taking time to respond. nLite is a bit 'light' when it comes to detailed instructions I might add. doon
  5. In using nLite for adding hotfixes, etc., at the end of the process, before creating an iso file, there is an advisory on the option of adding additional files ... to the directory. What do they mean by this ... and/or how does one do it? Where is the 'directory' at that time that they are referring to, etc.? From my limited knowledge, the iso is created and there is no way to then add additional files. It's also confusing in that, at the same advisory screen re: iso creation, I seem to recall that there is also the option of burning to cd. Thanks for any assitance... doon
  6. FYI As a newbie, thought I'd refer to the guide. In doing so, have noticed a section that appears to be outdated somewhatt. In the section for how to download hotfixes, there is a reference to using the Microsoft Catalog method to ... I presume ... mark and/or pick-n-choose various hotfixes, updates, etc. ... by putting them into a 'Basket', etc. .... and then ... again presuming ... downloading them all at once. But the directions as posted do not match what is visible nowadays on the Microsoft Update page. Is there a more current version of the guide possibly? doon
  7. What is "UL" that everyone keeps using? Thanks
  8. I downloaded the December file from your web site today, installed and downloaded the updates within it. Then, in preparation for slipstreaming, I thought I'd compare what was downloaded to what Microsoft Update process has heretofore downloaded into my machine. In this comparision, there were several missing updates, in the December file, as compared to what is on my machine; that, according to the Microsoft download/update process, have been earmarked as needed.. Why are there missing updates in your downloader? I just reformatted a couple of weeks ago; so everything Microsoft installed should be recent and relevant. My OS is XP Pro SP2. Thanks doon
  9. Does anyone know of a way to download all the needed hotfixes, critical updates, etc. at one time, to the hard drive, rather than one by one ...... so that they can then be slipstreamed? Thanks doon
