  1. CompName.exe should do the trick for you. I'm also sure you could script it using WMI.

compname?? where can i found it???

    Here.

Make sure you run this BEFORE you join the computer to the domain. It will break any existing connections.

I'm guessing you'd want to run it like this:

(file location here)...\compname.exe -c COMPANY-?s (System Serial Number)

    OR

(file location here)...\compname.exe -c COMPANY-?c (Chassis Serial Number)

I'm not sure which the asset tag falls under. (99% sure it is System serial number)

The output of that would be COMPANY-321654 if the asset tag was 321645.

    Hope this helps :D

  2. Just insatlled from my unattended disc today, I have encountered a few problems.

One is that damned windows genuine authentication nag thingy. Another more disturbing problem is that auto login does not seem to work? my username is set, the domain workgroup (domain??) is set to X and the pass is set, but it doesn't seem to login, cant figure out what the problem is here.

Thirdly and probably related to the previous problem, is that on my network places the workgroup X cannot be found.. and subsequently I cannot browse the other 2 computers on my network. Did I make a mistake during the creation of the network in the unnatended disc, which would explain not being auto logged on, or having the other computers showing up?

I created a fully unattended disc, but I am noticing several options I configured didn't hold, which includes but is not limited too...

    desktop resolution: not 1032

the username I created "james" not present.

    mouse cursor shadows not disabled.

show common tasks for folders is disabled, but there is no way to re enable it.

It seems impossible to reconnect to mapped drives at login, i disabled this with nlite, but because of above problems I need it re enabled, but using tuneup utilities I re enabled , but doesnt work.

several other minor desktop modifications I made absent.....

Sorry to hear about all of your problems.

WGA can be a pain and it's far from flawless. If your copy is legit, then try the workarounds here. To check, use the MGA validation tool http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 (direct to exe). If it outputs as Genuinie then it is a false positive.

Second problem might be a local security problem of some sort. Are you sure its a domain and not a workgroup? Some people get confused but those people aren't usually the people who make unattended Windows disks ;) Third problem seems to be related to the first. You probably made a mistake entering the information, seems to be the most likely cause.

The desktop resolution seems a little weird. If you're sure that you entered it correctly and your monitor supports it, then its a bug of some sort.

When I made a user it just made "Administrator" with my name in the properties. Weird, huh?...

If you used nlite, it might be a mistake b/c what you tell it what you need and it doesn't disable what you need even if you select it. Otherwise a bug.

You can reenable common tasks by opening an explorer window, going to Tools->Folder Options:

Try reenabling it by going to "Map Network drives" and redoing it, selecting the option again. (courtesy here)

    Hope this helps :D

What other desktop mods did you do?

  3. does it come pre loaded with the windows genuine authentication bul*****? KB905474 <<

I got this after installed from my unattended disc with integrated ryan hotfix update pack.

As far as I can tell, no. As Bledd said, it is now a seperate addon (I downloaded the pack today and integrated it into my XP disk but haven't tested it in the VM yet). :)
just use a legal copy of xp, problem solved

However, WGA does have some bad habits (checks for legit copy constantly. Why not check whenver you try to DL updates from microsoft and/or once a month? year even.) and the false positive rate is very high, so some legal XP owners get constant "Your Windows is not Genuine" messages. I have 10 computers, all WGA, no problems, but many people do.

  4. Hey everyone,

I' ve been working on my unattended Windows install. Got the hotfixes, SP2, registry tweaks, etc. worked in.

Now I'm trying to figure out what the switches are for iTunes 7. Has anyone figured them out yet? I tried figuring out the installer type myself without luck :P

    Thanks! :D

EDIT: Okay, I think I may get it:

The iTunesSetup.exe is made up of four compnent MSI files (download here).

The first is iTunes.msi. Second is Quicktime. I assume you need both for iTunes to work correctly (not sure, haven't tried it yet). The "/qb" switch (no quotes) should work on both.

Third is Applesoftwareupdater. Seems unnessacery, but the same switch should work.

Fourth is the iTunesSetupAdmin. Probably runs the other three but I could not get it to run on my PC.

    Hope this helps someone :)
