  1. .. I don't have one... .. I tried to start windows in safe mode, but the keys won't even work while the os is booting. I tried using a seperate keyboard, and mouse.. it didn't change a thing. *sighs* .. all hope is lost...
  2. I run XPpro on my laptop.. I just ran the tool that compacts un-used files to save space, and then defragmented my Cdrive, just like I do every week or two. Only NOW... when I start my computer, I get to the "Press Ctrl +Alt+ Del" screen (login) .. and the laptop is frozen! .. the mouse won't move, and none of the keys work. .. so... wtf?
  3. I couldn't catch the virus, only because I can't get to any of my virus-catching software stuffs.. Honestly, I don't have any clue where it came from, or what it's called. Someone just told me that there was a virus going around that deleted peoples boot files. That's what seems to be going wrong here. .. anyway... I might just buy a new **** computer. I have so much trouble with this one... It's old... it wasn't even a decent computer to start with. freakin' aye... I'll see if I can fix it. Thank you all for your help. If you can think of anything else, please post!
  4. Okay.. so it seems every time I post on here I have some huge problem threatening my PC. Well... this post is no different. The damage has been done.. now I'm trying to restore it. So here's the sitch.. I got a virus on my pc that deleted all of my boot files. When I started my computer it said they weren't in my PATH, and couldn't find them. I tried looking for them.. but they're long gone. So I got a Win98SE boot disk! Should have all the files I need on it.. right? Anyway.. the directions on the disk said to pop it in, turn on my PC, and follow the prompt. But... it didn't do anything. I'm trying to use the boot files on the floppy, to start my existing Win98SE. Can you even do this? .. Is there some kind of command I need to enter in order to access my floppy drive? I had some problems with my Floppy drive a few months ago too... honestly, I'm not even sure that it works. Would there be a way to get an external floppy drive, and be able to use it, without being able to go into my windows? ... all I have is DOS
  5. The compute DOES have difficulty starting up. I know this because it takes upwards of 15-20 minutes for windows to boot up, fully. now back to the problem. I tried to get a list of files from my PC to find out if I could do a repair. I entered " RegEdit /e Vmmlist.txt HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINES\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\VMM32Files" I recieved this error message: " Cannot export Vmmlist.txt: The specific Key name does not exist." Does this mean that a repair is impossible? I need to know if the trouble of manually trying to solve this is worth it, or if I need to just order another windows98SE disk, to install it over my existing OS, as suggested by Andromeda43.
  6. I was openning a program on my PC last night, when my computer froze! I didn't think much of it, so I just hit 'restart.' My computer takes forever to start up, a problem that remains a mystery, so instead of waiting I instead went to bed. When I woke up this morning, I tried to log into my pc, and again it froze! Again, I restarted. This time... the computer didn't get far at all before it brought up DOS, and told me that I was missing this file: VMM32.VXD .. and that windows couldn't be started without it! The screen also promted to me that if this file wasn't in my PATH then I might have to reinstall Windows98SE (wich I no longer have any disks for). WHAT IN THE NAME OF JESUS DO I DO?!?!?!
  7. Not to take focus away from the origional post here, but I'm having somewhat of the same issue. .. sorta.. I hadn't used my laptop in weeks. (battery issues). I just started it back up, and all the windows automatic updates started installing. After it automatically installed 20 or so security updates, I restarted it so the updates would take affect. Now it tells me that my copy of windows XPpro isn't genuine! This just happened five minutes ago... Am I going to continue to be able to log in/access my computer? ... or will my system eventually lock me out, just so I'll have to buy a new copy of Win. XPpro?!
  8. When I start my computer I get a screen that tells me I'm starting in "Manufacturers mode" It gives me a key combination to try ... Fn-X.. but doesn't specify in WHAT combination I'm supposed to use it in! I only allows me to try one combination each time I restart my pc. My question is.. do I hold Fn and press x? .. shift x? ... shift "-" x? ... press Fn, dash and then x? How do I get my pc OUT of manufacturers mode?!
  9. Well.. like I said... the computer is running better now that it probably ever has. The links from this site have helped me really clean it up, and give it some new pep. There's nothing at all wrong with the way the PC operates BESIDES the slow startup. Everything besides the startup, no matter what it is, works fine. EDIT: .. that, and I'm not sure what specs you mean, or where I would get them from. huskyfur: <---- computer stupid
  10. I installed the patch, and rebooted my pc... unfortunately, it didn't help any. I guess I should clarify that the computer has no problems shutting down. It operates quickly, and works fine UNLESS it's booting up. While the screen is displaying the "WINDOWS 98" screen.. and has that little blue bar at the bottom is when it seems to lag.. almost freeze. Has anybody else ever had this problem specificaly? I wouldn't think that it's performing any Safety Hardware Checks, or Memory Scans... Other programs that run comprehinsive scans/checks/fixes, run perfectly well.
  11. After spending some more time looking through the forums here, I've found a fix for most of the problems on my OS. Thanks to a lot of helpful posts, things are running smoother, and faster, than they have in a long time. But STILL it takes my Windows 98SE almost 20 minutes to fully boot up! What is wrong with my OS, and how can I fix it?! Help, please! T.T
