Running XP with no firewall,anti-virus or update, And pc is fine!

Ok now, sensibilities aside, need I remind you of WoW's song regarding the internet and its usage? While the internets is good for business things like banking and stocks and bonds; or entertainment things like playing online games, we must still go back to its roots. The internets is for pr0n. About 85-97% of the members on here that run AV and FW browse the net for pr0n, the rest are lying about it.

I am now using no firewall, no antivirus or anti trojan, spyware of anykind. I have medium nlited xp with no security udptate. (only Service back 2 build). It has been 2 weeks and yesterday I did a manual anti-virus scan, the result: nothing.

How is that possible ?, because I dont use internet explore and the bare minimum ms services ( about a dozen).

I was surprise to see that with only the service pack I was worm and virus bulletproof.

My conclusion is that security is best achieved by computer skills rather than by a ton of security software.

I'm with bledd on this one.

That probably is because you're behind a NAT router or a NAT modem (a modem with NAT built-in).

NAT eliminates the requirement of having a software firewall.

Bet you that when you go to grc.com and run Shields Up! that at least the majority of the ports are stealthed!

It doesn't matter. Firstly, if you know exactly what sites you're visiting, you don't need any special protection. Secondly, you can make even IE secure by turning off things like ActiveX. You're more protected when you browse as a limited user. And you're even more protected if you run IE with limited priviledges using the SAFER policy. Other than common sense, there are plenty of such little things changes you can do here and there, and they go a long way in protecting the system.

Good for you, but I was replying to your comment on how one could be secure using IE. I'm just saying that its possible to use IE without third-party software and remain secure.

The best option is, of course, to not use IE.

Why not? I've never used anything other then IE. IE 5, 6 and now 7. I've never had any problems with it.

Okay, I confess. I sit behind a router and I have Symantec AV Corp running. I even have an old version of ZoneAlarm runnng, though it hasn't had anything in it's log for a very long time. Since 1995 I haven't caught any nasty and hd to reinstall or something. Knock on wood. I've cleaned enough machines, though and reinstalled a zombified machine last week. The owner had been banned from sending email by her ISP! That's how she learned of it. She had a firewall and AV.

Interestingly, I had about twenty websites open a couple of days ago, some doing searches, some articles and some forums. Suddenly I saw that rare window from Symantec. AutoProtect had actually run into something. It was the ANI cursor exploit apparently. So, I guess it did it's job. I still have no idea which site or page was responsible. Maybe it was something like megaupload or whatever. No matter. I'm inclined to prepare a known clean image and if anything happens it is much faster and more certain to restore that image. So, I'm inclined to go along with mon ami, jcarle on this one.

I said, it was the best option. I never said that you cannot be secure with IE. I have no problems with IE either.

Infact, if you read my above posts, I clearly mentioned a few steps one can take to be secure with IE.

I have to use unsecured wireless networks often, so I do have a firewall, AV and all that installed. Symatec Antivirus and Firewall, Corporate Ed. Of course, I use Firefox and only use IE for the occasional one that won't work in Firefox or Opera or Opera Pretending to Be Internet Explorer. I have several times connected to a hotel's free wireless and within minutes gotten that little yellow box saying a threat was stopped, so I guess it's doing some good. But I am careful about where I go on the web, and all scans of the HDD, all manual poking-around and all analysis of running tasks seems to say there's no viruses. It's just with wireless networks I have issues because anyone can come in and (try) to mess around. Nothing much I can do there; if I want their WiFi, I need to take what I can get. No, I don't ever connect to the stupid network whose SSID is "Free_Public_WiFi" and has a big 'ol Ad-Hock symbol next to it. I've heard the horror stories of connecting to those...

But for goodness sake, apply the patches and updates!! No reason not to, as far as I'm concerned.

@Idontwantspam - If you need to use unsecured wireless, at least VPN to a free service like SecureIX.com. That way all your traffic will be routed through the VPN connection, and nobody will be able to sniff out the data that you're sending.

great topic, i'm on this group too that doesnt trust microsoft with its updates :)

the best Windows Protection i think it is

Win2000(i removed IE totaly)/Sygate Personal Firewall Pro 5.6/Firefox(with NoScript)

with sygate, i just block all windows services for using the network, the only allowed app's are Firefox, MSN and so on

ps, there's is a great feature that i love on sygate, its called DLL Authentication, it searches for new files that are loaded from a programm that is already running, it knows the difference of the application in a before/after way, it even detects if you install the Flash Player on Firefox (example), and it asks you if you want to give the app access on the Net, some users hate this Pop Up, but i think its the best thing that happened in my computer life :)

CONCLUSION......BELIEVE IS GOOD, CONTROL IS BETTER
