Windows Update Fix for Win9x/Me

Recommended Posts

I've noticed that your batch prompts the user for non-default "C:\Program Files" folder location.

This can be accomplished easily without any prompts, thru command line Windows Script detection [using cscript.exe].

Thanks, as always. The program is faster to use now ... since i have to use it often, this is good ...

1.04 contains the new 'program files' detection code, link from the 1st post.

EDIT: can people check how i went with Babel Fish Translation:

:English

SET Tex01=Welcome to the Windows Update Fix

SET Tex01a=Version

SET Tex01b=by

SET Tex01=Benvenuto al Windows Update Fix

SET Tex01a=Versione

SET Tex01b=da

:French

SET Tex01=Bienvenue sur le correctif pour Windows Update

Thanks to reno7 for the French text strings

v1.05 now available -- French strings added, display tweaked a bit

? stupid question here, probably, but could someone please explain the need for this? I've never had any problems accessing winupdate, whether it's win98se, winME, xp, and have never heard of any such problems w/my friends/family... ?

(unless, of course, this is somehow a "WGA" issue, but I didn't think that applied to w9x...?)

Some of us started seeing the following message:

If you can acces Windows Update properly, then there's no need to install this.

This has been discussed quite a bit here at MSFN so if you haven't heard about it, you should visit more often! :)

Hi,

in the forum with all the people it worked, i think thats only for me that it doesnt.

i tried fix1 and fix2 without success.

This is the page that apear to me http://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/...ankspage=2&

My language is portuguese. Program Files folder is c:\Programas

I have win98SE. I instaled IE6 SP1

I don't know what is wrong, can you help?

Thanks

I got the above message as a PM, i thought i'd add it to the thread ... i'll check into this

more info from my experiences:

1) a few times i've thought that the fix doesn't work --- but after trying a number of combinations of installing fixes 1 and 2 and also rebooting, it eventually works. Sometimes i've had to use fix 1, reboot, then use fix 1 again and it finally works. Talk about temperamental!

2) some people are reporting that just changing the shortcut properties of the WU link works for them, i will investigate this further.

If I may make a suggestion:

your link points to C:\WINDOWS\WUPDMGR.EXE .

Some people [i'm 1 of them] have Windows installed in a different folder/drive.

Some people [i'm 1 of them] do not have wupdmgr.exe anymore.

Is it possible to add code to your batch file to detect the presence of wupdmgr.exe [no matter where it would be located], and only after that to install the link file?

To my knowledge wupdmgr.exe only opens IE and points it to WU:

HI,

After I have trid new version 1.10, but Windows Update don't work. Always the same screen, for Macintosh Users.

What's the problem?

Latest info from my experiences: there i was testing out the new version of the WU fix and my first test was to see if i had access. I found that I did. Within 30 seconds, i had frozen myself out somehow ... i was back to getting the Mac message screen ... i thought, Frack !!! I yelled it in fact. Anyway, i also thought it handy that i was just about to test the new fix. SO i loaded the icon and ran it and... drum roll please ... it didn't work. Because i've been at this stage frequently just recently I was able to get access back within the minute but it did involve methodically going through every fix in my bag of tricks.

I think there are multiple conditions that send the user to this page -- it's a hard nut to crack so far, but i haven't failed to reach WU since v1.05 came out even thought i've had to reboot once or twice to get there. HINT: throw your logic out the window when trying to deal with this problem. Here's my checklist ...

1) try the icon fix first (fix 3) - it may just look like an innocuous benign little wisp of a fix but there is some logic in this method (ie the hint) as in why should changing the Start in: property make your chances of reaching Windows Update any greater? But we're leaving logic at home this trip remember! So try this first. Those without WUPDMGR.exe on their computers - ie MDGx and all his acolytes - are dealt with humanely (you guys can't use this fix, but don't worry the code sorts it out)

2) If that doesn't work, try fix 1 and rebooting and trying again if it doesn't work. Ah fix 1, the original and still the best. (Not really but that's what i tell it to keep it happy).

3) if it still doesn't work you better pull out the big gun fix - ie fix 2 -- it adds a dash of magic to the process that has worked for me in the past. Only nasty insects and rodents were harmed in the process of making it so don't fret. Use it without rebooting, and then do it with a reboot. If you still can't get access... oh well, there's always

4) dancing proud, f**king safe, and making revolution!!

PS - v1.20 out now --- see first post.

Hi soporific, thanx for your reply.

Nothing! Neither 1.20 version works for me.

Maybe because my system is hard modded wid Unofficial service pack, revolution PAck, 98-ME mod ecc.

If I haven't misunderstood your post, the problem could be this.

Thanx again for your precious support.

Bye

Oh well, sorry it didn't work for you ... it seems that it doesn't work for many others, the program has a pretty low rating on SoftPedia --- Did you try a number of variations? Did you reboot at least once or twice? There is very little information in your report to go on ...

Max_04, thanks for those strings ... sorry i just left out the new strings in v1.20 --- everyone using the English strings was fine. So v1.21 should be good to go ...

More info: someone pointed out in a post on annoyances.org that installing the DCOM98 v1.3 update fixed someone's problem accessing WU ... the link looked interesting ...

link to v1.21 available from 1st post but here it is anyway:

 Downloaded the ZIp file ... but it was EMPTY!

Wow, how'd you manage that? I just downloaded it then and wasn't able to find it empty. Strange days indeed! So the song says ...

I'll post a link to the EXE file for you just in case there really is a problem and it's not just you! :P

Thanks but no, even the EXE file didn't do it. When I tried to actvate it I got the message not a valid Win32 application! Must be something awry with my machin .....:whistle:

PS. How's this for a turnup. I don't get redirected to the V6 site any more. I get a message telling me only the administrator can update. (no admin, just me on a one-user paid-for machine which should do what I tell it .....:whistle: but doesn't!)
