Jeronimo Posted February 20, 2007 Share Posted February 20, 2007 (edited) If you disable pagefile/swapfile (is it around 770MB?) completely and then restart does Vista still not allocate all of your RAM?According to this maximum RAM is 4GB for 32-bit editions. MFCK Posted February 20, 2007 Share Posted February 20, 2007 Hi !My swap is always disabled.I dont need it with 4Go of RAM (Vista is more responsive without swap).With swap file enabled/disabled the system says 3326MB with Vista 32 and 4096MB with Vista 64 ! cluberti Posted February 20, 2007 Share Posted February 20, 2007 Video RAM shadowing, BIOS hot-add memory reservations, PCI-E and PCI-X slots - all of those things chew up RAM because they get reserved on boot. If you run msinfo32 from start > run, how much "Total Physical Memory" does it show? If it shows 4GB (~4029 or higher), then it's a BIOS issue. Per MS spec they will mirror that amount in main mem. Ok, here some Intel explanations :2.1 Memory Map 2.1.1 Addressable Memory The board utilizes 8 GB of addressable system memory. Typically the address space that is allocated for PCI Conventional bus add-in cards, PCI Express configuration space, BIOS (SPI Flash), and chipset overhead resides above the top of DRAM (total system memory). On a system that has 8 GB of system memory installed, it is not possible to use all of the installed memory due to system address space being allocated for other system critical functions. These functions include the following: BIOS/ SPI Flash (8 Mbits) Local APIC (19 MB) Digital Media Interface (40 MB) Front side bus interrupts (17 MB) PCI Express configuration space (256 MB) MCH base address registers, internal graphics ranges, PCI Express ports (up to 512 MB) Memory-mapped I/O that is dynamically allocated for PCI Conventional and PCI Express add-in cards Intel Desktop Board DP965LT Technical Product Specification The amount of installed memory that can be used will vary based on add-in cards and BIOS settings. amenx Posted February 22, 2007 Share Posted February 22, 2007 I've recently upped my RAM to 4gb and it also reads 3325mb in the Task Mgr. Frankly I did this out of curiousity as I had an extra 2gb of RAM laying around so plugged them in. Didnt really expect to see any improvement in performance but I was wrong! Certain games that would write several hundred mb to the pagefiles would do that no more, still some pagefile activity but its was minimal. And it was much smoother playing these games. Also Superfetch seems to load more apps and assign more memory to them with 4gb, at certain points the task mgr was reporting almost all the memory used with less than 10mb free, so you know these will be quite responsive when needed. This with a 965P chipset board (Gigabyte DS3), I think older boards may not see the same results. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
