File I cannot open

Have you tried opening it in Wordpad or for example Notepad2?

Which Office version are you using now and which one were you using when you wrote it?

Try opening it on another computer.

As I see it there are two possible causes:

-File created in a way that is not compatible with your current software.

-The CD has gotten old and/or damaged (you should always use branded high quality media when recording) and cannot be read correctly.

There are solutions for both cases that may work, but it's not 100% certain.

If you want to I can PM you my email, so you can send me the file and I'll try opening it using a few different progs.

Please clarify: Is the file you are trying to open on a CD? Are you trying to open the file directly from the CD?

If so, then try copying the file to your hard drive first. If the file copies without a problem, it's not the CD problem. If it does not copy, it could be a bad CD. Whether the CD looks scratched or not does not matter. Sometimes a CD will look perfectly okay but may not read at all. Sometimes a CD will have many scratches but read fine.

Second, what kind of file is it? A Microsoft Word document with *.doc extension? *.txt? Please clarify this as well.

That's the problem, I can't remember what I saved it as back then. I bounced from my own desktop pc to my daughters fiances laptop when writing depending on how my back felt that day. The reason I know that this cd contains a saved file from his pc instead of mine is because when I tried to convert it, I got a bunch of code but within all the code it said Richard and Tabitha and then the name of their company, so it was picking up his pc info as well.

I can send the file to someone if you want, I have been working since the wee hours this morning to open it and have had no luck. Maybe you will.

Oh and I have wordperfect office 12, but also got a demo version of ms word 2007 to see if that would work but it doesn't either.

We need some help here!

I've been working on this one for several hours now without any success.

The file seems very important to the topic starter, but unfortunately she only has one copy of it (on a CDR that may've gone bad).

The file is a standard .DOC and supposed to be written a few years back (2003) in MS Word in plain english using some common font (Arial/Helvetica/Times/Garmond or similar).

I've tried (on a fresh copy of the file, sometimes trying more than one thing):

-To open and/or convert it using a number of different text editing programs and office suits (97/XP/2003/2007/OpenOffice/WordPerfect/Wordpad/Notepad2/UltraEdit/DOS edit)

-Rename the file in a number of different ways.

-Open/extract it using other kinds of software (Photoshop/a few media players/PDF reader/WinRAR/UltraISO)

-Recover and/or convert using many different progs and a few free online services specialized in the subject.

-Change the coding and other things.

The topic starter has, by my instructions, used a software (CDCheck) to read the file off the CD.

She has also tried to read the cd using another computer.

The file can be opened in for example Wordpad (not in Word), but without returning any readable info:

¥‚Ä\ ž”ps´ÐeÔÎså™.DÐD°_û__ü–_ïEºFîà<ë_° úN!6__~³ÃE ¬±nœ_

(This is just a small sample of what it looks like.)

I've got a few theories:

-File is encrypted (haven't been asked for a password though, decryption softwares say the file is damaged)

-It's corrupted/damaged (it's likely the case, however there seems to be something in it which we cannot read)

-Some coding or font problem (can be possible, but is unlikely considering the language, fonts and software used)

Edit: Just added Office 2007 to the list of progs I've used in trying to open this file.

Okay, here's something I have yet to see in the code until I used that hex workshop. This was at the bottem on the code and I don't know if it means anything in particular, but have a looksie :)

It's seems like there is a problem with it.

A Word document STARTS with the following header:

00000000 D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 ÐÏ.ࡱ.á

and ends with something VERY like what you posted (+ some trailing 00's).

So if the beginning is correct, possibly the data is still there.

If the document was not encrypted, it should conatin all the text in plain format, in UNICODE or ASCII (i.e. the word "word" could be found as either "word" or "w.o.r.d.").

Try using a text extractor, like this one:

http://www2.objdump.net:81/files/foundston...text/readme.txt

http://www2.objdump.net:81/files/foundston...ext/bintext.exe

on the file, and see if it finds more strings.

My last post with the code only contained the very last part of the entire code, so you wouldn't have seen the top of it (or I assume the header).

I just used thatBin Text that you suggested and this is what I got. Hopefully you can make some sense of it. Seems rather confusing to me because it says both ms word 10.0 AND ms word 8.....so which was it written in? Your guess is as good as mine.

Well, no, it is perfectly normal that you made a document with Word 10.0 and the last reference is to 8, that refers to the version of the .doc format, not to that of the application.

(.doc formats are the same since Office 97, i.e. version 8)

The problem appears to me the size of the file, how big it is?

The offset 0001E45D you reported is in decimal 123,997 bytes, since the "Word.Document.8" is very near to the end of file, it seems like the file is too little to contain long stretches of text.

Could it be that this is just a "tail" of the original file?

Did you remember (approximately) how big it was originally?

Have you checked in Winhex that the first few bytes correspond to the ones I posted?

Here is what was in the beginning of the hex:

........ > . ... . . . . . . .... . . ....................................................................................................

....................................................................................................

....................................................................................................

....................................................................................................

............................... 5@.. ... 4 . . .v. . bjbj.2.2 ... %.. ;.......v5.#.....SjB....DL...z"TN..h..@Rr.$..a..K......RG`P%......Yv..D...!..Lk...WEl....R...05....J..Lan.e......2...%......../..k.%.1.J.N..<%.\?/...6 wWbD....&.UJ..W.l.C.....).7....fP."n...[=.$~.t.......{..D.s./.{.g i.

As for the size of the original file when I saved it, no clue, but I know I had at the very least 80 pages (only maybe 3 or 4 were the beginning for chapters) so I know it can't be too awful small.

I don't want to give you false hopes, but the "bjbj.2.2" you just posted, that should look as:

00000544 0E 00 62 6A 62 6A CF 32 CF 32 ..bjbjÏ2Ï2

in Winhex, is part of the header, and is always located at offset (decimal) 544

and the "........>" at the beginning appears like offset 16 of a word document.

So it seems like the file is missing just a few bytes in the beginning.

Depending on the size of the file, you might want to send me a copy of it, or put it somewhere where I can download it, so that I can have a look at it.

Please PM me the info or your e-mail, so that we can find a way.

But still, the fact that bintext found only those lines makes e think that very little data is in it.

Maybe it is possible that some more data is "somewhere" on the CD, though it would be strange.
