Tweaks Pack for Windows 98se v1.30

Recommended Posts

My suggestion is to "grab" tweaks from WinBoost and TweakNow PowerPack 2006 (old versions).
Maybe you'll find yet more tweaks in there :
This zip file contains vbs scripts and batch files that add or remove the cascading start menus, and add and remove the 59 (at last count, they're added to every couple of months) extra explorer options. They are provided here because they are too large to paste from a page. See the Explorer and Start Menu page.

http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/images/...oreroptions.zip

http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/index.html

http://www.mvps.org/serenitymacros/explorer.html

My web site should have most all those tweaks:

http://www.mdgx.com/newtip.htm

If one cares to read thru, it may be easier to read them offline, just install W95-11D.EXE or W95-11D.ZIP:

http://www.mdgx.com/95.htm

and then open the text files in Notepad.

Hi there,

This thread was inspired by the one started by Problemchyld but I thought it prudent to start another as I plan to maintain the pack and provide regular updates.

Readme.txt --- instructions and other info

Perform.txt --- explains the settings used in Perform.inf

InstTwk.bat --- a sample batch file that can be modified to install the INF tweaks

MDGX's System.ini settings page.rtf -- as it says

All the code for the above tweaks available from the attachment. Post to this thread if you have questions ... I will update the file regularly when new tweaks are posted.

To all, try to include the code for any suggested tweaks but don't feel shy about posting ideas if you don't know the code.

Hi soporific,

Thanks for your Tweak Pack. Great Job!

After I Re-install my Original Windows'98 CD,I Process to install the Unoffical Windows 98SE Service Pack(sesp21a-en) follow by RPLite5-Full,then RPLite6PP (Try to install after this is Rp7mm but can't process because it need ME cd??)

So,I install your Tweaks120.zip.

Everything go Well.... until i "Try Out" my New toy in Control Panel called Tweak.UI (this is something new to me,i like it)

After open Tweak UI,i click on Control Panel,there are two blank row with only a dot,without any file?

Only third row onward show "acess cpl-Windows Acessibility Control Panel"...

("All the list down is OK with Name")

First Question:What actually on the Two Blank space?

Second Question:Under My Computer,should i Check only Drive A and C and D ?

Third Question:I made a mistake to change the Program File and Program to other location...Original Program File should be located where & Progam should be located where?

Example:c:\Windows\???

THANK-YOU VERY MUCH!

Umm, i think i need to get v1.3 out the door - but in the meantime, let me try to help:

1) can you post a screenshot? I don't know what you are seeing here

2) It doesn't matter what you click in My Computer -- if, for example, you unchecked the C drive, this would hide the c drive from the computer (it wouldn't see it in any save menus). If this is what you want, then do it. Just leave them all checked unless you have a reason to uncheck.

3) to fix your folders do this:

- set Program Files to "C:\Program Files" (without the quotes)

- set Programs to "C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs" (without the quotes)

4) look before you leap next time! :lol:

Hi soporific,

You really have your hands in too many pies! :P But they're good pies though!

I found an interesting performance tuning article from Symantec in the middle of the year.

It really helped some resource and stability issues I had.

The article is here: http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...&view=docid

The key settings are in the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. I used to have an empty CONFIG.SYS file since I figured that Windows 9x no longer needed anything here... But in fact, Windows 9x is still dependant on CONFIG.SYS and the defaults are often not sufficient...

See Part 2 of the article, in particular the following settings:

AUTOEXEC.BAT

Add entries to increase the environment variables:

Add the following line:

SET DOS16M=2

This line should be added as the first line before any other lines in the Autoexec.bat file. It's function is to extend memory in DOS for strings of information that more than 64 characters in length.

CONFIG.SYS

Add entries to increase the environment variables:

Add the following line:

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /M:1

The /M:1 switch commands HIMEM.SYS to identify the processor.

Add the following lines or, if they already exist, modify them to read as follows:

FILES=150

BUFFERS=80

STACKS=12,256

If the computer is connected to a network, use a value of 200 instead of 150. The default value for files is 60, for buffers is 30, and for stacks is 9,256.

Man, a year ago, I really thought Windows 9x was doomed!

Then I came across MSFN and you guys!

I know what it's like trying to find time in a busy schedule!

How can one say thanks enough!

soporific, MDGx, the_guy, Tihiy, Maximus Decim, Gape, Xeno86, and many more that I have not mentioned (and least we forget the valuable contributions of LLXX - even though she got the pip and went to Linux land...).

We love you guys! :wub: (In a purely technical sense that is!)

- added 4 new tweaks: ADV_IE.REG, ADV_WE.REG, DMA_ON.INF, Win2k_scheme.reg

- added new file "How to increase system resources in Windows 95/98" to info folder

see the first post for the download link.
