How to set "No Sounds" by default

Recommended Posts

I created this reg tweak (see attached).

It disables everything by default except Netmeeting.

This is permanent so make a back up of...

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps]

...if you need/want to recover the default sounds scheme.

Can you please reupload it? Its not there anymore

Sorry for some reason the whole attachment has been removed from my member account.

I know that MSFN has been going through a bit of a revamp lately so I can only assume it was lost at some point during this process!

Here is the full reg file in a code tag instead:

The most accurate solution (if you cannot to apply the tweak at T-12, when the Default User profile is loaded to the Registry, and no users exist, except Administrator and special users like SYSTEM), but the hardest to perfom, is to modify the Default User profile and other profiles you want to modify.

Users are identified in the Registry with a SID (Security Identifier), a long alphanumeric string. You can get the SID of a user by querying the Win32_UserAccount WMI class. In the query, specify the user name and the domain name (the local computer if you're not in a domain). When you get the user instance, you must retrieve the SID field with this string. When you get his SID, you can get his profile path, by querying the following key:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\<User_SID>\ProfileImagePath

where <User_SID> is the user's SID. ProfileImagePath is a REG_EXPAND_SZ string, so you must to expand it before use it. Then, load the profile to the Registry, in memory, by using the REG.EXE tool:

REG LOAD HKU\AN_USER <Path_To_User_Profile>\NTUSER.DAT

Note NTUSER.DAT is the user hive on disk.

You will get a new hive under the HKEY_USERS key, named "AN_USER" with all settings of the specified user. You can write or modify any value under this key. When you're done, unload the hive by using the REG.EXE tool again:

REG UNLOAD HKU\AN_USER

Changes will be committed to disk, and the profile will be permanently changed.

For the default user, you can get his profile path by querying the following values:

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\ProfilesDirectory

HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList\DefaultUserProfile

With the first value, you get the base path (e.g. C:\Documents and Settings on a XP System) and with the second, the name of the default user, usually "Default User". Now, build the entire path to the profile:

<First_value>"\"<second_value>"\""NTUSER.DAT", and you're done. Repeat the same steps above to load and unload the hive.

By modifying the default user profile, *all new users* you create will *take* the changes. The default profile has NO effect on existing users.

Remember HKEY_CURRENT_USER is NOT the default profile, but the current profile (the current user logged on to the machine).

I have a VBS script that performs this. If you want, I can post some parts of it.

Hope this helps.

Perfect.

Reg.exe works and this is what I wanted...

I load the default user's profile, then import the settings given by Mr. Kof94 (with modifications to suit the path) and unload it..

Thanks a lot guys...

Hello,

To reiterate what I said earlier, all 'HKEY-USERS' references should be removed. They do not apply the tweak to 'all users', to do this remove all references to 'HKEY_USERS' and apply the tweak within cmdlines.txt at T-12.

laze.

Sorry, I missed your previous post, I haven't been following this topic closely.

I only realised the reg file had been removed when I visited My Controls.

I have now updated my previous post minus the 'HKEY-USERS' references.
