explorer.ex_ in FIX folder

I have a modded explorer.exe (just to be able to see 256 color icons in the tray).

explorer.ex_ is in the FIX folder and modifype is in the HFTOOLS. It works but I get an error message during install about the file not being ligit.

It kind of breaks my insert disk, walk away install.

Is this the right way to do it or am I supposed to modifype it before I cab?

Or is this the typical response for modding this file?

You can try putting the exe into the appreplacement folder, and HFSLIP will automatically modifype it and cab it too. But be careful, there are other DLLs that explorer uses (shlwapi is one of them). If you use the incorrect/incompatable dlls, weird things could happen.

If you had not modifyPE'd it,

I didn't.

Because I thought HFSLIP did this automatically. Just wondering if I should have.

I do have Fred's modified sfc.dll, sfcfiles.dll files.

I also have a ntoskrnl.ex_ in the FIX folder and this gets no complaint. I did this awhile back and can't recall if I modifype'd it.

edit: TommyP- Just saw your simultaneous post, will give it a try.

hi squeeto! :)

fix should do the trick ... but to refresh your memory ... you modifype'd it :)

Hey Kiki,

Since reading your post I thought I would try it. It works for my Win2k just as Draugen and S-M suggest.

Put a modified and 'makecab'ed ntoskrnl.ex_ in FIX.

The bmp should be 640x480 and 16 colors. I used reshacker to change the image.

Here is the one I made:

he! he!
