Sneaky registry tweak?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have numerous registry tweaks, but none to change my Start-Menu to classic, yet it still happens.

Can anyone spot the registry tweak below that may be having the undesired effect? I'm willing to lose the main purpose of the tweak in order to get the new-style Start-Menu back.

I have numerous registry tweaks, but none to change my Start-Menu to classic, yet it still happens.

Actually, it looks like you just might. One of the values of the ShellState function (also read from this key in the registry) is to set the start bar to standard or classic mode, as well as 29 to 35 other shell settings, depending on the OS. So yes, this is probably the setting - you are likely setting the start menu to classic with one of those 00 entries. See this link for what you can do with this value:

http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default..../shellstate.asp

It's not sneaky - it is well documented all over MSDN as a shell function.

I love you!

I never managed to get these infos and am somehow unable to search through MSDN. :D

You just changed my whole life. :P

I only have one question : some values such as

fShowSysFiles
TRUE to show system files, FALSE to hide them.

seem to also be set with another registry entry. Do you know which one has the predececence ?

PS: do you know if there is any entry in MSDN for HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Streams\Desktop\TaskbarWinXP ?

Thanks again. B)

The key for show hidden system files is:

Key: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Value: ShowSuperHidden

Type: REG_DWORD

Data: 0 = Hide Files, 1 = Show Files

I've never gotten clarification on which actually causes the setting to change last (take preference), but some testing should give an idea if you are still curious.

As to TaskBarWinXP, you'll find more information about that by searching for IStream or IPersistStream (or both) - just a hint. Remember, MSDN is a developer site, so think like a developer when searching it and you'll have more luck :).

cluberti, the title of my post was purely a bit of 'fun' and unfortunately i don't have the time to read MSDN as extensively as i'd like to.

Understood :).

  • 8 months later...

Sorry for dredging up this old thread, but it's very interesting and I have a question about ShellState.

The OP has 36 bytes in his ShellState value. I do, too, with XP Home SP2. A few of the bytes have values other than 00 or 01. The referenced MSDN page at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms538317.aspx describes 30 bytes that can be set in ShellState.

How can I map my 36-byte registry entry to MSDN's 30-byte description?

Is it correct to assume that the order of the bytes right to left relates to MSDN's descriptions top to bottom?

Thanks,

Ray
