problem with kb891711 update

Recommended Posts

One other thing, it says in the u891711 update that the installer will automatically uninstall KB891711. It didn't for me.

Secondly, it says you should be able to uninstall the u891711 update from the add/remove thing. Well, it wasn't there.

This installer has been a project I've put on hold for a while, but now I fixed all (un)install issues.

Please try again [118 KB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/U891711.EXE

I tested it on my Win98 SE computer, with and without official M$ KB7891711 installed.

Works ok.

Uninstalls any older U891711 [if any] and M$ KB891711.

And it you want to uninstall U891711, just open Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.

Complete details:

More info in the U891711 forum:

P.S.:

Please post all/any U891711 related issues in the dedicated U891711 forum from now on:

Thanks.

Is it possible that U891711.EXE, working "as a service" is freezing my dsl internet connection during one or two minutes, in a random but frequent manner?

ABSOLUTELY NOT, Fredledingue! when I installed the latest release of the U891711 patch on my Win98/ME machines (which use AT&T Yahoo DSL), my DSL connections were UNaffected.

so something else is causing your DSL connections to go haywire OR it could be your DSL provider is having some problems with their network. so that means you'll have to use your DSL connection at a later time when it is working without any problems.

try using a utility such as NetStat Live to check your DSL connection:

Ok, I got another problem.

Not only does kb891711 do the "Insufficient Memory" error, but now the kb918547 does too!

What is going on??!!

No idea why you get an "Insufficient Memory" error.

I am using the GDI*.* files installed by unofficial Q198547 [see below] since the day they were released, and never had any errors.

When you said KB918547 did you mean unofficial Q918547 [which update the GDI*.* files]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/Q918547.EXE

ReadMe:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/918547.TXT

or did you mean U918547:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/U918547.EXE

ReadMe:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/U918547.TXT

which is now *obsolete* and should be replaced with Q918547 [GDI*.*] above?

Added info: sometimes at startup, the updates repeatedly open over and over.

weird. maybe the KB891711 & KB918547 files you have installed are corrupted or the wrong version. un-install them and download & install the latest unofficial U891711 & U918547 fixes.

BTW - are u using Win98 SE, Ambassador?

when installing U891711, the kb891711.exe file should be version 4.10.2227 and the q891711.dll file should be version 4.10.2223.

I have Windows 98SE, with the 98SE2ME and Revolution Pack mods, the unofficial U891711 fix and the official kb918547 fix.

How can I check the versions?

How can I check the versions?

this one's a no-brainer, Ambassador. in Windows Explorer go to the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\ folder, right-click on the KB891711.EXE file, choose Properties and click on the Version tab. do the same for the Q891711.DLL file.

it most likely that something else is causing the Insufficient Memory Errors and not the 891711 files itself

run MSCONFIG from the Run dialog box and click on the Startup tab to check what loads at startup

i checked, and currently what is loading is:

*ScanRegistry

*SystemTray (duuh)

*LoadPowerProfile

*ICSDCLT

*Tweak UI

*AVG7_CC

*AVG7_AMSVR

*LoadPowerProfile

*ATIPOLL

*ATISmart

*SSDPSRV

*KB918547

*PersFw

*U891711

Note: "CriticalUpdate" and "TaskMonitor" are off.

P.S. The reason why I asked how to check for versions is because I thought KB891711.EXE was a DOS file, therefore you could not check the version from the properties tab. Just FYI.

KB891711.EXE is NOT an MS-DOS file. It's a Windows file and SHOULD have a Version tab. If the Version tab does not appear on the KB891711.EXE file when right-clicking on the file and selecting Properties, then the file is corrupted and should be removed.

Delete the KB891711.exe and Q891711.dll files from the \WINDOWS\SYSTEM\KB891711\ folder, download the U891711 patch from MDGx's web site again and re-install the U891711 update and reboot. You should NOW have a clean install of the KB891711.EXE and Q891711.DLL files and should load correctly.

I have uninstalled KB891711.EXE because I got a BSOD after updating to the newer version (MDGX thread).

Not sure if it's KB891711.EXE because I made all the 'MDGx' updates since last months at the same time but my internet conection became very slow, my browser slowly responding to clicks, system tired... then I decided to kill the KB891711.EXE task and got BSODed.

I suspected KB891711.EXE to slow down my DSL connection before. I can't say for sure it's that but since I uninstalled everything seems relatively normal.

As LLXX said, it would nice to evaluate the real need for this patch.

...And maybe the "mysterious anonymous author" could take a nickname. That would relax the tension.

Unless he wants to make a myth of himself.

Have you tried U891711 within the past few days?

I've updated it a few days ago [118 KB]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/U891711.EXE

Now the files install in %windir%\SYSTEM\U891711 instead of %windir%\SYSTEM\KB891711 .

And the uninstall function works properly now.

BTW:

The anonymous author specifies in the ReadMe file [see NOTE #4]:

http://www.mdgx.com/files/U891711.TXT

that:

NOTE #4:

KB891711.EXE can be stopped *safely* using the Close option (but *not* the

Kill option) of programs like EndItAll or similar:

http://www.mdgx.com/speed.htm#TSK

CoolKill, WinKill and Process Explorer do *not* have a Close option.

Killing (an application) happens without a warning to respective application,

and that can be disastrous, as is the case with *all* versions of KB891711.EXE

(official and unofficial), which modify USER.EXE "on the fly" (as DrWatson

shows).

Trying to "kill" that process, *will* lockup Windows.

I'll relate your thoughts about the need for this fix to the anonymous author.

IMHO:

If you surf the internet, you would be better off if you have it installed.

Of course, this is only a matter of opinion.

Same as LLXX, I don't use it either.

I only test it to make sure it works every time it is updated.

And if the anonymous author likes to be called by a nickname here at MSFN, I'm sure he'll let us know. ;)
