rik
Honestly anytime you start changing the software and installing stuff whether it's patches, tweaks or whatever, there is the potential for problems. But, personally I do recommend the SP updates simply because they indicate flaws that MS deems need to be fixed. And I have seen more good than bad come from performing the updates... Sunil
Guys, there is no distinct difference between SP1 and SP1a, the only one is that sp1 contains java vitual machine, where as SP1a does not...also both of the service pack slows the computer down, but you should still install it because it fixes a lot of flaws.Sunil
Aaron
Some people have experienced slowdown, such as applications taking 10 times longer to load after installing SP1. This won't happen when SP1 is slipstreamed into the Windows XP CD though.
UPAZ
I would recommend you to install SP1 (or SP1a) but as AaronXP says I would also recommend you to slipstream into your XP.. I havent had any problems with SP1.

Skyfrog
I slipstreamed it the day it was released, and I've had no trouble with it that I'm aware of. I definately recommend it because it fixes a lot more problems than it may possibly cause.
