I hate to say this, but I've been making installers with IEAK and the resulting installation source will still require a WGA check of some kind. I've tried this many times now in many different ways. At work I have a few dozen laptop computers that get mounted into vehicles. I generally don't have these laptops connected to any network when I set them up. Just pop in a DVD and let them go.

This is fairly easy to emulate in VMware by just disabling the VMware NIC. If you look in %SystemRoot% for the IE7 log file after the install fails, it clearly states that installation was cancelled because a WGA check could not be completed. So I imagine at this point I have to make a choice - either plug in the laptops while they install or come up with some kind of "unofficial" method of installation.

There is one scenario that I'm curious about as I have not tried it yet and that would be OEM SLP systems. With that method of install and WGA integrated into your source, network connection or no network connection, your system will report as genuine according to MGADiag.exe. With a VLK install this is not the case.

I'm in a similar situation - but I have (finally) managed to get IE7 to install at T-12 without a network connection on XP Pro SP2 (a genuine volume edition). To get this working does require some "unofficial" trickery however...

That's one way, but I doubt most people want to use cracks to get it to install. If I still cared about IE7 at all, there's an old iecustom.dll "floating around" that will make it install regardless. Redmond doesn't want ppl to install their [sucky] browser apparently. One has to install the WGA spyware or use cracks. I'm getting real fed up with them pushing that WGA thing down our throats so bad. Blocking useless downloads was one thing, but this is getting ridiculous. I DON'T want that POS, even if my copy is 100% legit. Activation was already a real PITA, but it's getting ridiculous. You can only treat your customers like criminals for so long. If they keep pushing this thing (thinking about Vista and Office), it will lead to mass exodus to "penguin land" (hopefully Sun can make Java match C# eventually, then I could mostly drop Windows). Personally, I'm just not going to install it at all, there's so much better browsers out there without all that BS.

Well for me it failed with an error that it couldn't carry out a WGA check with a non-cracked LegitCheckControl.dll in place. (obviously it fails without LegitCheckControl.dll). I would be interested in how it is that you've managed to succeed without an internet connection. In your case were you running setup on a PC that had already used Mirosoft Update (and hence already run and passed a WGA check)? Are you using a non-volume serial? Clearly something is different as for me it wouldn't install until I had an active internet connection (which is not available at T-12 stage of setup)

Note - I didn't mention before - for most people - it should be possible to install (with an internet connection) by installing using RunOnceEx. In my case however all internet access goes thru a passworded proxy server which prevents an unattended installation as WGA can't run a check until the proxy settings have been set and a username/password have been manually entered.

If anyone knows how to set a username / password for a proxy server in a no-user-interaction way I would be interested in that too

Also - for the record - you DON'T need to use both /passive AND /quiet - as with all updates from Microsoft which use update.exe you only use one of those 2 options

Indeed - I've been investigating Ubuntu for home use, vista looks horrible. Of course I already use firefox, but I work for several primary schools, and they're pretty insistent on the windows/office/IE route for everything so thats what I have to work with.
