which is obselete between q269601 q242937

They are the same!! q242937 is actually q269601

q242937 is the kb article number, whereas q269601 is what the update is named as when you install it. It's confusing, I know. That's why q242937 is in brackets at the end of the description for q269601

NO THEY ARE NOT, soporific! Q269601 supersedes/replaces Q242937. wdmaud.sys file in Q269601 is v4.10.2226 while Q242937 has wdmaud.sys v4.10.2225. Also Q269601 contains 7 updated files, while Q242937 contains 4 updated files. Compare the two Q242937 & Q269601 patches here.

Q269601 no longer has a KB article associated to it [MS has been pulling a bunch of Win98/ME hotfix KB articles off their support site but some of those Win9x/ME hotfixes with now non-existent KB articles are still available].

You can now add Q216204 to the list (I recently emailed MS for that one and got it). KB article for this is still there but no longer mentions the updated files. Q216204 contains SYSDM.CPL v4.10.1999 for win98fe and v4.10.2223 for win98se.
