I Inherited a computer

Hello to all,

After hours searching, I searched for a forum. Better to find people who know what they are doing!!

Anyway, I've got an inherited computer. So when I change a file it comes up C:\Documents and settings\the last person's name\My Documents\etc.

I got as far as to understand it's the name the computer was registered to when it was first bought. How can I change it so it says C:\Documents and settings\MY NAME\My Documents\etc.

create a new user and use that as ur profile. although if its an inherited computer it would be best you just format it and reinstall windows again with everything u want.

you can go into User Accounts and change the names of users, add passwords, delete passwords [provided you have the original] and make accounts public/private.

Yeah, if you got a PC from someone else, I'd suggest reformatting and reinstalling Windows so it's all yours. Unless they have some files they left behind that are interesting, you could back those up and then reformat.

Make sure you find out what version of xp you have grab windows serial number before formatting if you dont have a recovery cd, and if it is a Royalty machine, look at this thread.

First log on.

Control Panel, click User Accounts, click Change User Name.

Type in new username and click OK.

That won't change the username for the Documents and Settings folder, though.
