second hdd, not detected

Recommended Posts

I installed a second hdd on my other ide channel, its from an old dell computer. A dimension 2100. I have tried every jumper setting listed on the hdd, and even the original setting, no jumpers. It wont show up in the computer. Its not dead, because it worked on the dell. Its a 20gig maxtor. The power is plugged in, and Ive tried out other matrox connectors, but if it is powered its not showing up.

Run some S.M.A.R.T. tests and CHKDSK to ensure that the drive is OK.

Personally, I don't trust a drive that gives me *any* trouble. They are just too inexpensive and easy to replace (by manufacturer, even) to store valuable data on one that might be going bad.

how do you run a smart test? Anyway, it turns out that I just had the jumpers wrong, misread a setting, **** 1pt font..... Then it didn't work when I put it in the computer, but I just had the wrong type of screw, it was coming into contact with some metal
