deathwarder
I installed a second hdd on my other ide channel, its from an old dell computer. A dimension 2100. I have tried every jumper setting listed on the hdd, and even the original setting, no jumpers. It wont show up in the computer. Its not dead, because it worked on the dell. Its a 20gig maxtor. The power is plugged in, and Ive tried out other matrox connectors, but if it is powered its not showing up. jroc
does it show up in the 'bios' during boot...if so..then your problem is you have to make it active in windows 'device manager' (Computer Management/Disk Management)

I have a dvd drive and a cd drive on one of the raid channels and the hdd on the other.

deathwarder
yeah, just got it working, I think the drive was either overheating or not perfectly flat due to an installation error on my part because its working now, and Ive got it running right not lying on some antistatic material. tain
Run some S.M.A.R.T. tests and CHKDSK to ensure that the drive is OK. Personally, I don't trust a drive that gives me *any* trouble. They are just too inexpensive and easy to replace (by manufacturer, even) to store valuable data on one that might be going bad.
deathwarder
how do you run a smart test? Anyway, it turns out that I just had the jumpers wrong, misread a setting, **** 1pt font..... Then it didn't work when I put it in the computer, but I just had the wrong type of screw, it was coming into contact with some metal
tain
HD Tune is a good all-around HDD tool. It reports S.M.A.R.T., but not as elegantly as some other tools.
