Auto-Patcher For Windows 98se (English)

Recommended Posts

Too bad about the lack of community support. This project should be a sticky and really should become the preferred method to update a fresh Windows install, or even an older Windows install since it only updates what isn't already there.

I HAVE to get v1.95 released !! ... I will comment on the rest soon ...

(and thanks for the sticky !!!)

Can anyone confirm whether this project is still alive?

I am concerned that this thread has now been removed from the "sticky" topics on the board........

:(

soporific,

This A-P topic is still on the sticky list [has never been removed]:

http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=95815

HTH

It is indeed listed as "sticky" within that thread.

But it is no longer "stickyfied" per se. Are there two levels of "stickiness"?

Regarding AutoPatcher for Win98:

* i originally made it to save me heaps of time patching win98 machines

* i stopped using win98 myself a few years ago but still kept up with keeping AutoPatcher updated because i was still seeing machines that were running Win98 that i was being asked to patch.

* recently, i have been using it much much less and so it doesn't need updating nearly as much.

* i won't be releasing updates any sooner than once a year, unless there is a very good reason to.

* expect the next update in December this year.

i hope that clears stuff up. I'm not too fussed about the loss of sticky status.

OK, regarding the expected update for December 2009, were there any actual updates in the pipeline or was this just conjecture about possible updates to come?

BTW, I've not used this package myself, so cannot comment on its merits.

Joe.

I suppose i should weigh in to the debate :)

The reason i was ignoring this thread was because of the tone of the guy who was complaining about the lack of an easy accessz zip file. I didn't expect this many replies though! Thanks to all those who put him straight ;)

And Kel was right, in this instance, the Inno Installer was indeed acting as a wrapper for all the files. I used it so i could fine-tune the installer messages, fine-tune the creation of shortcuts (NEEDED), and also provide an easy uninstall after the user used the patcher. All someone needs to do to 'get' at the files is to install the 'program', copy the program files to another location. and then choose to uninstall. Sorry for not mentioning this in the first post. I will rectify this.

There was previously a zip file available, but when my website was hacked into and i lost all the content, i didn't feel like re-uploading another 300 MB zip file. Why? Because the inno installer really is all a user needs. Again, Kel was right with this. Moral of the story? Listen to Kel :)

Sop.

Firstly, since back in 2008, I downloaded a file called 'AutoPatcher98.Dec.07.Final.(Zip.version).zip', and really don't want to download another 300MB (it's difficult) unnecessarily, would the correct installation sequence with this starting point be as follows? :

1. Unzip the above file to an installation directory

2. Run AP2008UP.EXE and point it to the same directory

3. Run the installation batch file

Secondly, can anyone confirm if the correct MD5 or CRC32 for the ZIP file should be as follows? :

MD5 = e2a6a3729e70692032c5f7c76be04323

CRC32 = 2dd8fb02

Finally, may I humbly suggest to add to the first page here, a comment to the effect that the executable files of this package can be extracted using 'innounp.exe' from http://sourceforge.net/projects/innounp/

This would help ease concerns by people such as Sweet William about the opaqueness of this package, aka. "the debate" referred to above. BTW, in case you guys think he's paranoid, you should perhaps ponder the implications of "my website was hacked into", also mentioned above.

Joe.

PS. It is not my intent to reopen "the debate", rather to offer a suggestion to address one of the concerns and reduce the chance of a similar debate in the future. That and seek information concerning the ZIP version.

Your wish is my command... ;-)

I've added a new FYI into the 1st post concerning innounp + Inno Setup.

Also added strike-out lines over old, invalid links.

Is there still any activity in this thread or the authors work, or have all relevant been included into the 2007FULL and 2008UP release?

Nothing new has come up since?

Dead, end-of-line, nada, no more, zilch. It works as good as it gets. 2008 was the end of the road as far as AutoPatcher. Not much new except some odds-and-ends (see the USP98SE thread).

I should knw because I participated in the development and have had no real desire (or time) to "improve" it. Sorry...

Just wanted to let people know incase they come up with the same problems that I did, the file AP2007.exe located at the mirror here, http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#AP98 is the wrong file. If you install this then put the 2008 update on top of that you will get loads of errors during installation about missing components. I do not think that all updates are included in this file.

You need to download the files here instead and you will have no problems, the file names are the same but the files are different.

Auto-Patcher December 2007 Full:
http://www.mdgx.com/spx/AP2007.EXE

Auto-Patcher December 2008 Upgrade:
http://www.mdgx.com/spx/AP2008UP.EXE

Edit: You know what I just realised that the two download links are exactly the flipping same! I don't understand what happened, when I downloaded from http://www.mdgx.com/web.htm#AP98 I got a slightly smaller file that extracted to C:\Program Files\AutoPatcher98 and had a different installer program and the icon was different, but when I downloaded from the 2nd link the file was bigger, and had the same icon as the 2008 upgrade, I'm confused!

Nuh-uh, dude. Those are good links. I have the "originals" from the Soporific (defunct) website and they binary compare exactly.

Try a resumable downloader (e.g. FlashGet) because your downloads must be screwed up -or- you've got a bad index on your HDD.

How, exactly, did you download (do NOT use IE "save as" because it DOES fail), on what OS, on what size HDD/Partition? P.S. this is an ENGLISH package.

FWIW, there's also a 98SE SP3 here as well

http://www.htasoft.com/u98sesp/

Topic (wonderfully long) here -

http://www.msfn.org/board/topic/61749-98-se-sp-332/

And do read the "stickies" for any special things you may need to do depending on your (newer) hardware (limitations), e.g. RAM, HDD size, SATA, etc.

Now is there also something like this for Windows 95? I have a tripple boot on that machine along whit Dos, but i'm need some patches and stuff for W95. Oh i|m running the OSR2.5 on it, if that matters.

Unfortunately there is no Auto-Patcher for 95 as submix8c pointed out. There are several projects here pertaining to 95 though, as linked and otherwise. You should be aware though that not all of those projects are compatible with each other, so mixing them all together is not advised. For example using the Unofficial Service Pack in conjunction with FIX95CPU or XUSBSUPP can create a potentially unstable or unbootable system.

The last full version of AutoPatcher was released in December 2007.
The file is 286MB.
Subsequently an update was released in December 2008, which should be 45.3MB.
You cannot use that by itself, install the full version first, and then the update.
