Internet Security for Windows 98 questions

I am looking for a complete internet security system made for windows 98. I use to have Norton 2003. As up now, Norton 2003 is outdated and the later is not supported.

I tried Zonealarm Internet Security 6.0. It seem to be incompatible with with Windows 98.

Are there any other complete security solutions out there that still support Windows 98.

Thanks ahead.

Have you tried Avast for email and anti virus? I also use Sygate version 2710 for a firewall, both are free

Avast home edition and Sygate was taken over but the last freeware version is all you will need for 98. Make sure you use sygate 2710 because the next version had a bug for 98.Norton will cause allot of problems and are real memory hogs.

Computer security is no less important for a 98 machine than for an XP machine.

Security is security and hackers, viruses, trojans and worms, spyware adware and any other malware are the same no matter what the OS.

Being in the computer repair business it falls to me to Secure several new PC's every week.

The security package that I use on my own xp system is the same I use on my customer's old 98 systems.

First you need to get all the old "crapolaware" off of the target PC.

Deinstalling Norton or McAfee is the first stage of the Cleanup.

Then I install AVG 7.1 FREE, update it and do a full scan.

Then I install AdAware SE/Personal with all current updates and perform a full scan.

AVG active scan also looks at every file scanned by AdAware.

Then I install Spybot Search & Destroy and Spyware Blaster and get the latest updates via the internet.

Then run a full scan with Spybot. Spyware Blaster is only a blocker and does not scan or remove spyware.

Spybot S&D will find and remove things that AdAware will not.

On an XP system, I may also install "Trojan Hunter", in its 30 day trial version and run a full scan. Quite often it finds things that no other program finds.

By the end of the last scan, the system is completely clean and running smoothly.

It's really quite a simple process.

Cheers!

Hi minhgi,

Do what Andromeda43 said; it's good advice.

For a firewall, this is the one I would use on Win9x/ME:

NetVeda Safety.Net

I have used Sygate Personal Firewall, and it's decent. However, its default behavior is to automatically give server rights to all applications that you allow. It's a bad practice, and it's why I've decided not to use that firewall any longer. Sure, you can always can go in later and disable it, but it's a bit of a nuisance. The worst thing about this behavior is that the average user won't bother (or won't know) to go in and disable server rights for things that don't need it.

I hear Nod32 is great small and low on resources but you have to pay for it.

It runs great in ME. Best av I ever used as far as performance impact (not the least memory use), never had a virus. Maybe because I've always used Gecko based browsers (since IE hijacking, way back).

NOD32 antivirus system information

Virus signature database version: 1.1703 (20060811)

Dated: Friday, August 11, 2006

Virus signature database build: 7830

Information on other scanner support parts

Advanced heuristics module version: 1.035 (20060810)

Advanced heuristics module build: 1120

Internet filter version: 1.002 (20040708)

Internet filter build: 1013

Archive support module version: 1.048 (20060714)

Archive support module build version: 1173

Information about installed components

NOD32 For Windows 95/98/ME - Base

Version: 2.51.26

NOD32 for Windows 95/98/ME - Standard component

Version: 2.51.26

NOD32 For Windows 95/98/ME - Internet support

Version: 2.51.26

Operating system information

Platform: Windows ME

Version: 4.90.3000

Version of common control components: 5.81.4916

RAM: 512 MB

Processor: AMD Athlon Processor

This version doesn't include a firewall, but v.3 is going to, but I don't know if it will be compatible with 9x, hope so.

I use KPF 2.1.5 with remote administration disabled, also the least performance hit I ever saw.

Hope you get an answer to this because my win98 has been attacked by hijacker and malware and I'm having a heck of a time getting rid of the stuff. Tried my Yahoo tool, Macafee, Adaware, Spybot. Think I'll try Zonealarm. Thanks!

Yep. ZoneAlarm doesn't support win98 anymore along with a host of others. What's worse are the ones that haven't bothered to mention that they no longer support their Win98 products, but have new unresolved win98 security holes that will probably not be resolved. I have been fighting a loosing battle against an invasion of hijacker / malware for 39 days now. AS of last night and this morning the Microsoft support line call tree still has a number to press (3) for security problems and then (1) for Win98, etc. last night I was connected to a tech support who gave me some suggestions to follow, which I did for 14 hours until I dug myself a deeper hole. Today the screener refused to put me through to support for my win98, even though I told her the call tree specifies win 98 support. She finally put me through to someone because I also have a new registered XP. That person would not help me with my Win98 either. At that point I told her I would be happy if I could just get my files off of my win98 and onto my XP, but she said she can only help me with one PC at a time!

Meanwhile my win98 is way worse than yesterday. I can't even access my control panel where a rogue malware removal tool has taken up residence. It has also generated multiple copies of it's own perverted Win32 and other programs that try to boot and access Explorer, even with my modem unpluged and my dialer checked cancel. After running Ad-aware- se and Spybot in Safe mode, I find new versions and repeat versions of Malware, cookies; data miners, etc. after deleteing and deleteing the restore files and re-runing both in safe and regular modes without ever going on-line or having a modem cable plugged in.

Also, it appears that AT&T Yahoo internet service no longer provides their version of what was McAfee spyware and virus scan to dial-up customers, only to DSL.

I'm feeling squeezed out. Just wish I could get my files out with me.

Thanks guys, All of you have been helpful.

Here what I have found so fall being the of the best Internet Security Suit for Windows 98.

The name of the suit I am using right now is Kaspersy Internet Security v.6.1.303. Russian made.

I pick that suite due to its strong firewall (pass most link tests), maybe the best antivirus protection, par performance of antispyware against spysweeper or spyware doctor, and system resource usage is low.

Of course the suit does have serveral weak points:

weak antipam, weak keylog removal (so does spysweeper), no parental control, no IM protection

The review can be foud at PC Mag and other varies sites.
