Sun Java and Flash Player Don't Mix

Recommended Posts

Okay deleted all, Sun Java, MSJVM, and Flash Player 9. Re-installed Sun Java, the latest version now is 1.05.Update 6, the latest version used to be 1.05.Update 7....did a version check at Sun Java, and indeed it told me I had the latest version with Update 6...what happened to Update 7?

Went to http://gens.consolemul.com/ and YES! I got the Java Icon to the left of the time. It worked, so far.

Could be MSJVM was conflicting with Sun's Java or Flash Player is conflicting with Sun Java, don't know yet, I have to re-install Flash Player 9 and see if the problem reappears..

I believe things should be working smoothly now with Flash Player 9 and Sun Java 5.0 updated 7 installed.

Inspect the "Windows\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player" folder if using Win9x/ME

or "Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Macromedia\Flash Player" folder if using WinXP/2003

where "username" is, of course, your user name. delete these folders after un-installing Flash Player before re-installing it.

Not as a solution but as a workaround for anybody that might have a similar issue and wouldn't have the time or will to mess with the registry and stuff, I would recommend Nir Sofer's TurnFlash 2.10 in one of its versions (GUI or command line) to quickly enable/disable the Flash on their system.

I use it to temporarily enable Flash on sites that really require it, as there's no fun to watch my 200 MHz CPU crawling when there's some #%#%¤" Flash advertising on the pages I try to browse, so I usually keep it off.

I hope somebody finds this helpful.

nice tool to disable or enable Flash, Drugwash

AVOID installing Flash player 8 or 9 on your ol' 200Mhz PC (how much RAM does your 200Mhz computer have?)

those versions are major resource drainers. Flash 8 and 9 are best suited for 600Mhz CPUs with at least 128Mb of RAM.

Heh, the harm has already been done: I had Flash 8 already for some time and recently I put Flash 9 over it. Just for kicks (and for some animation that required it). Indeed, the 9 build is slower than the 8 one, but as I only have 64MB of RAM (4 x 16MB - can't find 32MB EDO RAM cards anywhere), it doesn't really matter too much - it's crawling anyway. This machine is already doing much more than it should, sometimes (did I mention the 98SE OS on it is about 22 months old?).

Funny thing is that, when I went to the Adobe site for the update, it downloaded build 9, said everything went OK, but the verification box said "8.0.22.0 was installed succesfully". The same thing happened when I tried to upgrade from build 7 to build 8; apparently Adobe as many other software developers lately, try to rule out Win9x from the news. Well, I just went to the temporary internet files folder, extracted the files from the cab (or zip, whatever it was), right-clicked the inf and chose "Install". That did the trick with v8 and also with v9. I saved the archives on CD, so I would have them at hand if needed.

Unfortunately I have no Sun Java installed currently (I only miss that and .NET to bloat my 98SE completely), so I can't give an opinion on the topic issue. But personally I wouldn't reinstall the whole stuff - OS included - just for this minor issue, considering a simple workaround is one click away.

Flash is actually one of the easiest components to remove/install/enable/disable. All you need is the OCX (swflash.ocx or flash8/9.ocx, depending on the version) and put it somewhere, then (un)register it with regsvr32.

Hint for finding older versions - Google for the filename and look around. I can help you find older versions if you want.

Do you have any idea if the corrected versions 8.0.33.0 mentioned in Multiple Vulnerabilities in Adobe Flash Player 8.0.24.0 and Earlier Versions security bulletin is also avaiable? I was able to locate 7 and 9 only:

Flash Player 7.0.68.0 (required for Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows NT)

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashpl...sh_player_7.exe (Netscape)

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashpl...player_7_ax.exe (IE)

Flash Player 9.0.16.0

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flash...lash_player.exe (Netscape)

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flash...er_active_x.exe (IE)

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flash...er_active_x.msi (IE)

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flash...ent/swflash.cab

http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flash...lash_player.exe

That vulnerability should hardly be of any concern, as noone should be allowing arbitary sites to use ActiveX.

You can get 8.0.33.0 from the Flash Player 8 Update located here: http://www.adobe.com/support/flashplayer/downloads.html#FP8 (comes with the standalone players and a lot of the other players too, that's why it's so large)

BTW, here are some older versions: http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/knowledgebase...cfm?id=tn_14266

Do NOT get the Flash Player 8 app from the Adobe Knowledge base article. the fp8_archive.zip file from the KB article still has Flash player 8 version 8.0.24.0 as I've just checked right now. Get the one listed at the Flash Player downloads page as mentioned by LLXX.

OR use this link to download Flash Player 8.0.33:

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/flashpl..._flash8_win.zip

this one DOES have Flash Player 8.0.33.0 but they come in "debug" and "release" editions and as MSI installers. You MUST use the "release" edition of the Flash Player 8.0.33 MSI packages.
