When a new "Full Release" with more Tools & Updates ?

Hi.

You know, when I compare this SP with AutoPatcher, I am frustrated !...

Look : I think there should be a separate release, called the "Full Release", and that would contain more tools, utilities, softs, and updates, to make our Win98SE the best system that we like so much to continue to use !

For example, what I would suggest to include here are :

- acrobat reader 6.04 (I have all the updates with me).

- Croa 1.6 Free (http://www.davidcrowell.com/)

- JStrip 3.3 Free (http://www.davidcrowell.com/)

- DivX 5.2.1 Free (I have the setup with me).

- Flash Player 9.0 Free (I have the setup standalone with me).

- Shockwave Player 10 Free (I have the setup standalone with me).

- Nero InCD Reader Free 4.3.2.0.1 Free (I have the setup with me).

OK : maybe, for legal reasons, some of them may not be possible to include to this update...

OK : maybe, for some lacking of time and ressources, some of them may not be possible to include in this update...

OK : maybe, to avoid to increase too much the size of the downloadable update, some of them may not be possible to include to this update...

But, anyway, now we have all broadbands, I would not mind spending one hour dowloading 400 MB of Setup, that would include the maximum of all of these !!!

So, what do you think ?

Look at these tools carefully : they are very great, and they deserve to be included in any decent Win98SE installation, to complete and serve it better and fully, mainly for Internet use, with all the multimedia comfort and security !!!

Some remarks:

-many commercial tools, for most of them are even better opensource or freeware alternatives...

-you want winzip & winrar? why? RAR can also decode & create zips...

i would suggest the free 7-zip over both commercial programs

My opinion:

Windows 98 (SE) is mostly used on old computers.

In most cases, it means also users who are using this operating system for years.

In most cases, these users have their favorite application(s) for every task and will see no reason to use different one.

As a result, it means that any BIG pack of 3rd party software will be useless for them because they just use different programs.

There are fans of Winzip. There are fans of WinRAR. There are fans of 7-zip. There are fans of PowerArchiver. There are fans of Adobe Reader (specific version). There are fans of Foxit Reader. If you will make one big pack, it would either contain the installers only - or there will be big problem with file associations.

What player should be added? Media Player Classic? WMP7.1? WMP9? WMP10? RealPlayerOne? What version of PowerDVD? Or BSPlayer? Or what? There are too many personal preferences.

Or was there any other idea behind?

No. Use a stripped-down 5.x version - less bloated and can view almost all PDFs already.

Recommend ffdshow universal Codec

Go. The setup can be stripped down considerably to just a single batch file to copy and register an OCX.

Ok :

2 pbs ?

1/ Preferences of their own pgs by each user : so, make this pack with optionable installs only in it !

2/ Files associations : so make this pack as a distribution of installers only, and each user manually install and configure files associations as he wishes. Or better : provide a script that will install and configure each soft with compliant pre-defined files associations, so no hassle (just the question how to decide all these configs from your side only...).

Oh, by the way I forgot 2 of my favorites :

- Mozilla Firefox 1.5.0.4.

- X-Setup Pro 8.1 (http://www.x-setup.net/).

And no : MSN Messenger 7.5 is not supported in Win98SE (only 7.0)...

The next version of Windows 9x Power Pack will include a mini version of my utility compilation called BHT. You can currently download the full edition here: http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4855, but it is out-of-date at the moment (currently working on a patch alongside this project). It will include many of the tools mentioned in this topic, as well as a simple batch script that will update the definitions for Spybot, AdAware, and a few other apps, then install them. (Already exists on BHT, just needs some tweaking).

And, as it seems, someone else has already created an installer-like tool to work with the PowerPack, so you can select what you want, and click Go. I'll try to work with the author of that tool to get it in to the new edition of the PowerPack - this is essentially what the OP is asking for.

First, folks, I appreciate a lot all the posts here after mine !

I agree that from my original list on this post, there may be some of these tools better replaced by some others (but I dont know any of them...), and that some new other good tools have also been mentioned here (but I need time to discover them).

That's why I will stay with my own list for the moment, and will see later what changes to make to it, with your help, of course.

But just think about that : since a few times, and now more and more since support will end in 11/07/06 for Win98SE, any kind of new tools may only work for XP !!!

So, where are you gonna download from all these tools, in their prior versions, when they were still compliant with Win98SE ???

That's why I would like to submit my own package of old installers (only Win98SE latest versions !), because nobody may be able to find them again on Internet !

But I need your help : my package is about 700 MB (I know this is huge, but I have no expertize in reducing Setups), and contains no Setup Scripts !

So :

1/ Where on Internet can I upload 700 MB of a single zip file, to be accessed by anyone from its URL, with a good speed and bandwith, and of course, for FREE ? Maybe one of your own servers ???

2/ Who can help me to build the Setup Scripts, since I dont have at present a Win98SE PC to test anything (but as soon as I can, I will do that also).

3/ How to reduce the size of my package without disminushing the full complete variety/quality of its offering ?

4/ NB : my package does not contain anything illegal, but may require that all the separate licenses of each tool to be re-viewed again carefully, before deciding to keep some tools in the final package, or to remove them from the final package, because my package is actually an Alpha 1.0 (not to be distributed, but may be downloaded for testing and commenting and helping).

Something that big deserves to be torrented instead of put on a server, unless your connection is decently fast uploading and you can serve it from your own machine.

Hi.

I have posted the Full Update Package V Alpha 1.0 in 7 splited files of 95 MB each !....

To know the content before : download the List + their MD5 Hash Codes !

To test all these Tools, and help me provide an automatic Setup for all the Tools, with a dialog box that asks to check what to install, and then etc... : download the package, unzip it, goto into the folder, read the docs, and launch Setup.

That's all !...

Next target :

- eliminate Tools not possible to include in a Free package distribution, and place a Link to the download page instead, with automatic downloading, and installing ? Any help from someone ?

- replace some of these Tools, by better and optimized and bug-free and Free Tools : tell me which ones to use, and where to find their latest stable non-beta versions ?

- build an automated General Setup, for all the Tools, with GUI, at once !

I guess also that my Package is similar to other Packages proposed here also, so, I may change my Package to not include what is already in other Packages, and to provide a complementary Package, with Tools that were not included in these others Packages.

Yes, nice to wait another 70 minutes for each part of the zip archive...

For anybody who wants to test this and with no paid access to Rapidshare I have put these files on our web server temporarily - the uplink speed is 4 Mbit/s only but better this than nothing I believe.

I have tried it only for Rapidshare but have never been able to succeed dowloading anything with it. It just waits again and again. Certainly I am doing something wrong.

Just took 2 x 1,014 bytes from your bandwidth for the filelist that I downloaded twice by mistake BTW.
