nLite 1.0 beta 6

Recommended Posts

Can anyone tell me why nLite version 1.0 beta 6 makes much smaller installations than RC6, RC7 or RC8 when essentially all the same components are selected for removal. There seems to be several hundred MB difference after installation. The installation I made using the beta version is less that 900 MB after installation and the installations made with subsequent version are > 1.7 GB. All were made from the same copy of XPHE and incude all the SP2 updates. The installation made from the beta version seems to be very stable and I have not experienced any problems with it. I am just curious what the differences are.

Are you sure you removed the same stuff? If you used a last_session.ini made in Rc7/8 and used it on Rc6, there will be some stuff in the ini to be removed that isn't available in Rc6.

I assume by source file you mean the finished nlite installation disk size. I am talking about the installed Windows folder size after installation. The installation disk is only about 165 MB.

I did not enable CAB recompression

Netframe 1.1 was used with 1.0 beta 6 and version 2 with RC6, 7 and 8. Java version is 5.X. No hotfixes were added to any of them. I updated after installation.

These "programs" are more and more space-consuming. It does not explain a 800MB difference but afaik .Net 2 eats more space than .Net 1.

I think you should try inside a VM with beta6 and final, without any software or update. It's hard to guess the impact of softwares.

my bad turbines ... 165 is a very decent source :)

i completely agree with Camarade_Tux here ... seeing that the add-ons we use are compressed, once installed (i.e., Java & .Net) eat a lot of space ... verifying from my Add/Remove programs --- hundreds of mbs are allocated for these ...

but the swollen installation still does not compute ...

i'd assume that as far as compression is concerned you did the same with the previous builds ...

Ok things are getting a bit confused for me. None of the installations I refered to include programs, NetFrame or VM Hotfix addons. I am going to reload my basic windows installation from the sources made from the beta 6 and then load the one made from 1.0 Final. Then I will include the ini file for each as will as exact size on disk figures. That may help sort this puzzle out.

Ok it seems I may have found the problem and maybe someone can explain why. The difference is in the virtual memory size. In all cases I move mine to a second physical drive partition. It seems that in some cases that the initial space used by the page files on "C" is not recovered after moving them to another drive even though the setting on the advanced virtual memory settings show "no paging file" on C.

Below are 2 example preset texts. The first one produces a uncompressed windows size of ~ 500 MB after moving the page files to another drive. The second produces a windows size of ~ 1.24 GB with the page files moved to another drive. In fact the second shows the same size regardless as to whether the page files are moved or not. The problem does not seem to be related to any differences between 6 beta and subsequent versions of nLite

The only difference I see is in the Drivers, Networks Settings and Services components.
