the usability of a 98 machine and an XP machine have more in common than you think. XP was built on the fixes of the mistakes in 98 and earlier.
That's what I'm trying to say to Link21... ;)
98 is alright for some people, but for a lot of people, it was a terrible os and always will be.

Lot of poeple last tried w98 (FE) 4 years ago, when there was no uSP, no official MS patch, no update and MDGx website was barely a shadow of what it is now. ;)

And also hardware was weaker so the common impression is that w98 crashes every 5 minutes: This is not true anymore except of course when you have specific hardware or software uncompatibilities. But that has always been the case and Linux and other free OSes are not void of poor soft/hardware compatibility issue.

TBS w98SE++ still crashes occasionaly even on modern system, especialy old, corrupted and broken instals, but never to the point of nightmare. XP also has its problem of its own. Just glance at the XP forum...LOL

i guess what it really comes down to is whether or not you know how to use a computer. if you do, then you wont have any problems. i always had problems with 98 on some computers, others it was ok. my armada 1700 is fine with 98 fe or SE, my inspiron 7000.... ooo thats another story, its weird that the computer was designed for it, but still, it runs bad with 98. taking long than XP to boot up is un-acceptable. so im just going to stick with what OS runs best on what hardware. my armada 1700 will stay 98, my other 2 laptops will stay xp (both are inspiron 7000's) and my desktop is and always will stay XP. even when vista comes out, im not going to use it, iv used the beta, and i dont like where they're taking it.

but thats another story all in itself.

MDGx website was barely a shadow of what it is now.
Actually my web site was almost the same as it is today, 4 years ago. ;)

Exceptions:

- there was no 98SE SP2

- there was no 98SE2ME automated executable [only do-it-yourself guide]

- there was no Win2003 Server Gold/RTM, so I had no updates or tips for it

- I had no Linux page

- my web site was still hosted on AOL [got my own domain in 2003]:

http://members.aol.com/axcel216/

http://members.aol.com/maxspeeed/

The only difference is that I wasn't on MSFN yet.

I have discovered this forum in November 2004.

FYI about my site:

- is up since August 1996

- I get ~ 6000 unique hits a day

- ranks the 223,611th most visited web site according to Alexa.com traffic report:

http://alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=mdgx.com

- over 4000 other web sites link to my site [old axcel216 on AOL + new mdgx.com]

- has been published at PC World, CNN, PC Plus, PC Format, Langa.com, WinXPCentral.com, TechSpot.com, LockerGnome.com, c't Magazine, L.A. Times, ShellCity.net, PC Mechanic, Shell Shocked, Scott's Newsletter, Dmoz.org, Google.com, X-Setup.net etc...

http://www.mdgx.com/reviews.htm

- pages that put my site "on the map" [ranked 5 on Google PageRank, sometimes 6]:

@ MDGx -- ****, you really got some history there. Keep up the good work!

@ Brian10161 -- Are you talking about the Inspiron 7000 from 1998? Oh wow, I wouldn't touch that laptop with a 10 foot poll anymore. My dad had that one and it is the SLOWEST thing I have ever seen. I can not believe you were even able to put XP on that piece of crap! The last time I used that laptop was in the end of 2004, when my dad had me reformat the whole thing and put 98SE on there. I think I put the USP on there along with all of the updates. That computer never crashed for me... it was very very very slow however.

well, its a Pentium II 366Mhz with 384Mb of RAM ATi Rage Pro with 8mb and a 40GB hdd. the computer performs faster than you think. im running XP pro on it, and it takes less than 30 seconds to boot up. so its very fast for its age. i got the computer free to boot too, so its a double bonus :D maybe your just use to a much faster computer? idk, but this computer isnt a piece of crap by any means. with its 15 inch display and nice size hdd, its a great all around computer for me. 98 was the real draw back on this computer. XP runs so much better. i like it.

ps, if you still have that laptop and dont want it, send it my way ;)

yah the ram really did help. XP ran alright with 128, but with 256 (later 384) it doubled performance (then trippled) so really this computer probably handles XP as well as maybe a 500 with 128 or even 256 mb of ram.

the program rocket dock says it needs a 500 minimum, but im running it on here with the high quality setting and its fine. so does that mean it runs like a 500? lol i doubt it, just a decently nLited version of windows ;)

i dont think the HDD did much for performance anyway, i originally had a 12gb in this computer , then i upgraded to a 40 and didnt notice much difference. it might have been a little bit quicker, but not too noticable for me.

heres a movie of my laptop booting up, only thing that i removed was the useless DELL logo thing at the begining (that adds 30 seconds to the darn boot time  ) i7k.wmv

Does his guy hate Windows 9x or what? [smiley translates as "wacko", btw]

I have no business getting in the middle of this, but can this guy spell?

Quoted from his own post:

"piece of crap Windows 98/ME opertaing"

Verbum sapienti satis est [Enough said]

It is just typo errors because I type fast to try and get my point across. You just spelled something wrong too. You said his instead of this.
