For eye-candy I would have to go with Enlightenment 16 / 17. For usability KDE (but I prefer Gnome to KDE) for the most useful.... bash shell :P

xfce al the way, - for obvious reasons i guess, -

its lighter and faster than both kde and gnome, also it suits to slackwares

(i use a slack-based distro), minimalistic setup, but for sake of compatibilitie i do use the gt3 (gnome) lib for any ap that doesn't compile with a GTK+ gui,

btw openbox isn't bad either (if you want somethin even lighter than xfce).

i tried xpde once and it was pretty basic and might be ok for windows user to use because it is similar to it but for me gnome is better
